Julie Niemeier carries the 4-seed at the Merida Open and the German native will take on Italian Lucrezia Stefanini to kick off the main draw on Monday in Mexico.

The line setters are showing no favoritism toward Niemeier or Steafanini in the first round of the Merida Open so it will be up to our resident WTA expert to read between the lines and give us a winner to start the week.

EJ Garr’s Julie Niemeier vs Lucrezia Stefanini prediction leans on the Italian to excel and you can check out his tip at even odds below.

Julie Niemeier vs Lucrezia Stefanini Prediction: A Coin-Flip Battle in Mexico

  • Prediction: Lucrezia Stefanini Moneyline
  • Best Odds: +100
  • Bookmaker: Betfair
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at 7:00 am UK Time on October 28, 2024.

It’s a coin-flip decision for this first-round affair and the bookmakers are showing no indication of the winner of this match in Mexico. The lines fluctuate from site to site as Betfair shows -125 on the German native to advance and BWin is showing -120 on the Italian to reach the second round.

With Betfair offering the highest line on Niemeier, the best price available for the Italian native to win this match lands at even money.

While the lines vary, I suggest that Stefanini will win at even money through Betfair because the Italian has been playing well lately. The same cannot be said for Niemeier, who has lost five of the last seven outings and has struggled to find her game since Wimbledon.

Niemeier is ranked 82nd on the WTA Tour and isn’t even favored over the 166th-ranked player today. Stefanini has played 21 matches since the end of the grass swing, and Niemeier has only played in four events since the Fourth of July.

Niemeier is coming off a loss at Tampico against 149th-ranked Varvara Lepchenko and the German was listed at -135 but flopped in straight sets.

The simple fact is that Niemeier’s game needs to vastly improve but that will have to wait until next season. This is the last event of the season and three tournaments are running concurrently before we arrive at the WTA Finals.

Stefanini should have enough confidence to get past Niemeier in Mexico.

JULIE NIEMEIER RECENT FORM

Julie Niemeier is 6 – 11 since the French Open and the German native has won only two of the last 7 outings.

Niemeier is 18 – 12 on hard courts this season and has a record of 34 – 26 in 2024.

LUCREZIA STEFANINI RECENT FORM

Lucrezia Stefanini is 13 – 8 since Wimbledon and four of her last six matches have gone the distance.

Stefanini is 23 – 15 on hard courts this season and with a record of 32 – 25, the Italian is headed for a fourth consecutive campaign with a winning record.

NIEMEIER VS STEFANINI H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

This will be the first meeting between Niemeier and Stefanini on the WTA Tour.

The winner of this match will advance to face either Sara Sorribest Tormo or wildcard Ana Sanchez in the second round of the Merida Open.
