I do think that the big Swiss is the deserved favorite in this matchup, but considering Martineau’s penchant for playing well indoors and in quick conditions and the serve he possesses, it’s tough to lay 3.5 games against him.
I do think Kym is the better player. He’s had better results, is more consistent and athletic, and has done it on a variety of surfaces, all while still playing with plenty of power and aggression. That’s not quite enough on its own though in quick conditions. You simply may not get the chances against strong servers and may need to win in tiebreaks or it may come down to who can take their chances when they arise if they’re scarce.
I’m happy to back two proficient players with plenty of power and strong serves to play a tight match. In these conditions with these two guys playing, I’m stunned this total isn’t at 23.5 games. I’m not complaining, as I’ll look to take advantage.
Jerome Kym Recent Form
What a year for Kym, who is right near a career-high in this week’s edition of the rankings and he’ll make his top-150 debut on Monday. Winning the tournament would put him on the doorstep of the top 100 as well.
What’s more impressive is that he’s done it primarily playing in Europe, where the fields at this level are much, much tougher than elsewhere in the world.
Barring injury, he has to be one of the favorites to be a top-100 debutant in the coming months. He’ll certainly receive at least a qualifying wild card for the Basel 500 event in the coming weeks, and perhaps that’s where the broader tennis world will learn about his talents.
Now just three wins away from his third Challenger title on the year, I’m excited to see if he can work out the problems the Martineau pace should pose.
Matteo Martineau Recent Form
Martineau’s progression to the quarterfinals are a decent indicator as to how he plays. Now, two matches isn’t a definitive sample, but the number of close sets he’s played does tell the story of how well he serves, but how much he can struggle on return as well.
He’s not the greatest athlete from the baseline and his one-handed backhand isn’t the sturdiest when forced to deal with pace – particularly in quicker, lower-bouncing conditions.
The serve and forehand and perhaps a willingness to come to net are going to be important in this one. Without much room for error, he can’t afford to miss too many first serves or throw away too many points with sloppy unforced errors.
Jerome Kym vs Matteo Martineau H2H – Stat of the Match
The only other time these two played was on an indoor hard court. It was a Martineau win in three sets, but it’s worth noting it took place three years ago when Kym was just 18 years old, while his French counterpart was 22 and probably more developed as a player.
