Another match where I’m not going to make the case that Draper shouldn’t be the favorite, but considering the way he’s looked of late and the way Giron has played in quicker conditions this season, it’s hard for me to agree that this is a lopsided kind of match.
Draper certainly has the talent and the weapons, but his return game hasn’t been where I’m sure he and his team would want it and even playing a more clay-centric opponent in the opening round with a big serve saw him struggle mightily to generate much pressure on return.
Throw in the fact that the grass courts in Stuttgart aren’t just fast like all grass courts but have been faster than every other tournament outside the year-end finals when it comes to several service metrics and it just makes it that much tougher to expect anyone to win by margin against a competent quick court player. Our Draper vs Giron prediction is for Giron to keep things close

Jack Draper Recent Form
Though Draper isn’t at his best on clay, Draper wasn’t even as impressive as one would expect on hard courts either. He was great in Adelaide and played well before his retirement in Acapulco, but he’s had far too many early exits – especially as a fairly large favorite – this year.
His game is incredible. He has a strong serve, and a big lefty forehand, he can play with spin or flatten out his shots and he’s pretty athletic for his size. Remarkably, he hasn’t been able to make it further up the rankings, but he still has time. He’s been a known commodity now for several years, despite being just 22 years old, but there are plenty of guys that have made runs on the main tour as a teenager and then struggled to break through and stay near the top of the game.
Hopefully Draper can figure it out before he joins that group. Let’s just hope it happens after Wednesday.
Marcos Giron Recent Form
After a tough stretch on his least preferred surface, I’m sure Giron is ecstatic to be back on a quicker court. With his serve having looked better by leaps and bounds to start the year, he raced out to an incredible start to 2024 with finals in both Dallas and Delray Beach, serving guys off the court with regularity.
Though he struggled in Miami, even the one clay court match that plays almost like a hard court saw him reach the quarterfinals in Houston.
Then in the opening round at this tournament, the world No. 54 managed a solid underdog win against Andy Murray, finding a break in each set and re-finding that incredible win rate on serve that we’d grown accustomed to in the earlier portion of the season.
Draper is better at this stage in his career than Murray, but it’s not as though he’s been playing up to his potential or even anywhere near where he’s expected to. He’s been overvalued all year and I certainly think Giron is an adequate player to oppose him with.
Jack Draper vs Marcos Giron H2H – Stat of the Match
The only match these two played came back at the Australian Open in an odd tilt that saw Draper win in five sets, but Giron was in charge for most of the first three sets before falling apart in the final two. That’s a small sample, but at the very least, the hard courts in Melbourne do tend to play quickly and could indicate this one could be a close encounter as well.
