Iga Swiatek doesn’t need to win the title in Cincinnati this week because the long-term goal is to prep for a run at the U.S. Open Major title a few weeks away.

Iga will take out Gracheva to start this WTA1000 event and I am pointing to the total because the Mademoiselle is in big trouble today. 

We all know that Iga Swiatek was massively disappointed at the Olympics in Paris after losing in the semifinals but she put on a big smile at the podium with her Bronze Medal in hand. Iga put her pride aside in the Bronze Medal match and pounded Anna Schmiedlova at 1 & 2 regardless of the situation and that wasn’t easy.

Varvara Gracheva has looked good through three wins in the Queen City but dropping a set to 123rd-ranked Tomljanovic in the first round might be concerning.

Let’s just cut to the chase because no matter what Gracheva is doing it won’t help her take on Iga Swiatek today. Iga isn’t going to Cincinnati to win the U.S. Open title but the Polish native knows how important it is to get used to hardcourts again after a lengthy run on clay.

Varvara got past Pera and Sasnovich easily in qualifying and as I mentioned, dropped a set against Tomljanovic in the last outing.

Gracheva is 7 – 9 on hardcourts this season and hasn’t won a title since the 2019 campaign when she earned her two and only ITF wins.
