After sweeping Gracheva in the opening set in the second round, Swiatek was pushed to three sets having to work to land a spot in the third round.

Let me start with… WHAT WAS THAT?  

Yes, I used caps to yell how disappointed I was having that Under 17.5 with Swiatek and Gracheva after Iga won the first set to love. It should have been easy-peasy from there, but a tie-breaking second set that went to the Mademoiselle shocked me in forcing a third frame.

The line setters don’t seem to be affected by the wild outcome for Swiatek posting odds on the Polish #1 to win in the -1100 range. That’s just insulting and to that, I hope Marta shows up in a big way in this third-round clash at the Cincinnati Open. 

Marta did well in Paris with three wins including one over Maria Sakkari before falling to the Silver Medallist Donna Vekic, and the big win over Svitolina in Toronto is also a confidence booster.

Kostyuk was smashed to pieces by Swiatek at Indian Wells in March, and losses like that stick with you. Even if the World’s #1 player is across the court the walk back to the locker room has got to be gut-wrenching.

I hope Marta uses that loss as motivation to keep pace with Iga and after seeing Swiatek lose her way against Gracheva I see Marta hanging around and covering the big spread.

At +6.5 with -111 odds, a 6 – 3, 6 – 3 final is all I am asking for to cash a Friday ticket in Cincinnati.

Iga’s record in 2024 is amazing on grass, clay, and hardcourts and let’s just put the 53 – 6 record in context with five titles this campaign. Iga has pocketed over $46M from just the five tourney wins alone, and it’s tough to knock Swiatek out of any event early in events. 

Putintseva keeping Iga from achieving anything at Wimbledon is the only shocker this season besides the loss to Alexandrova early in Miami.

MARTA KOSTYUK RECENT FORM

Marta is picking up nice wins recently as mentioned, and the Ukrainian native could do wonders for her confidence by giving Iga Swiatek a match in the third round. We all know, they both know, and the small Cincinnati crowd expects that Iga will walk all over Kostyuk en route to the quarterfinal.

Kostyuk is 19 – 7 on hardcourts this season and has reached the San Diego final along with the Miami semifinal where Iga won their only clash this year.
