Can Coco break through Swiatek or is the Polish native too much to handle for the American?
Iga Swiatek hadn’t played tennis since the US Open in September and the two-month layoff showed early against Barbora Krejcikova in the opening match of the WTA Finals.
Krejcikova won the first set in a tie-break against Swiatek to begin Orange Group play and the Polska native needed to mount the comeback to earn a 2 – 1 win. With a 17 – 13 game count, Swiatek is behind Coco in the Orange Group table but the World’s #2 is well aware that she has controlled the American time and time again.
Swiatek looked flat early against Krejcikova, which was to be expected after missing two months of action. We’ve already seen how a lengthy layoff affected Elena Rybakina at the WTA Finals, and the Kazakh native is at the bottom of the Purple Group after two losses in Saudi Arabia.
Tennis is 50% physical and 90% mental, so it will be up to Coco Gauff to get out of her head and just play the best damn tennis she can play today. With a +3.5 on the handicap, I will expect Coco to give Iga a game!
IGA SWIATEK RECENT FORM
11 – 1 is a pretty stout number so we can assume that Swiatek wasn’t disappointed to see Coco land in the same group for the WTA Finals.
There was much concern about Swiatek attending the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. Swiatek fired Coach Tomasz Wiktorowski after three successful campaigns and announced in mid-October that she would hire Naomi Osaka’s former coach Wim Fissette.
Swiatek is concerned with her service game and brought Fissette to help her improve headed to the WTA Finals.
Swiatek has amassed a 30 – 5 hardcourt record and is 60 – 8 in 2024 completing a third straight campaign with 60+ wins.
COCO GAUFF RECENT FORM
Coco Gauff is 13 – 2 over the last 15 outings since the US Open.
Gauff has an exact record of 51 – 16 as she did a season ago and the American #3 is 32 – 9 on hard courts in 2024.
Since 2017, Coco has never produced a losing record on any surface.
SWIATEK VS GAUFF H2H – STAT OF THE MATCH
Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff first met in 2021 on the clay of Rome, and who knew it would be the start of domination for the former World’s #1.
Coco Gauff has defeated Swiatek once in 12 meetings and that win marks the only match that Coco even won a set against her.
