Thursday wraps up the second round of action from the U.S. Open. Let’s jump into one of the matches that has the potential to go long in Hubert Hurkacz vs Jordan Thompson.

Thompson’s win probability is down around 35%, while Hurkacz is favored to win at 1.44 odds. The handicap is 3.5 games and the total games line is 39.5.

Jon Reid’s Hurkacz vs Thompson prediction is for Thompson to give Hurkacz everything he can handle.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Jordan Thompson Prediction: Thompson With Great Chance to Upset Seed

  • Prediction: Thompson to win
  • Best Odds: 2.79
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at 4:30 am UK Time on August 29th, 2024.

This could be a fun one. Two strong servers who play their best tennis on hard courts squaring off for a spot in the final 32 of the men’s singles draw.

A few things to watch for. Can Thompson time up the Hurkacz serves? He’s been able to against other guys with powerful first serves in recent weeks and he’ll need to do just that in this tilt as well.

Second, can Hurkacz last for several hours in what could be a grueling, physical affair? He’s had injury concerns this summer and a long battle with plenty of longer rallies could wear him down and allow Thompson to pull off the upset.

Hubert Hurkacz Recent Form

Since his injury in the fourth set tiebreak at Wimbledon against the upstart Arthur Fils, Hurkacz hasn’t looked the same.

He’s won four matches in a deciding set, retired once, and required two tiebreaks in his opening match against a Challenger Tour player who prefers clay courts to hard.

Against a server as strong as Thompson, who has had a good year and doesn’t commit many errors, this version of Hurkacz could be in trouble. If the injury issues arise, a longer match would also favor his opponent. The best-of-five format normally plays to the advantage of the favorites, as it gives them a longer period to correct course if things are going wrong. In this spot, I think it’s closer to a detriment for the Pole than a benefit.

Jordan Thompson Recent Form

Now 20-10 on hard courts for the year, Thompson has proven that he can win on the surface regardless of speed, part of the world, or time of the year. He has a title in Los Cabos, a semifinal in Brisbane (polar opposite from the Mexican venue in terms of court speed) and he made the final this summer in Atlanta.

Most importantly, he’s proven that he’s capable of winning on hard courts against some of the bigger servers in the game – important considering Hurkacz falls squarely into that category.

Wins against Reilly Opelka, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Jack Draper, and Ugo Humbert have proven just that, and his thrashing of Constant Lestienne in the first round proved that the withdrawal in Cincinnati a few weeks ago wasn’t anything to be overly concerned about.

Finally, Thompson is one of the few players who has consistently demonstrated an ability to play in heat and humidity without his level declining too much. With Hurkacz being somewhat one-dimensional and questions about his overall fitness level, I’m happy to back him at a price nearing 3.00 odds.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Jordan Thompson H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the two. With both on their favorite surface and very strong behind their first serves and enjoying a good, long battle from the baseline, this one could take a while to finish.
