The first week of grass court action saw plenty of close calls with our bets looking strong in many cases and falling short by a tiebreak result or service game.
I’ll look to continue the strategy of opposing extremely strong favorites that may be able to serve their way through games easily but struggle on return.
Hurkacz is one such player, with plenty of grass-court prowess but a return game that leaves plenty to be desired. I was hesitant with Cobolli a week ago, but he acquitted himself well against Jan Lennard Struff. I’ll back him to keep things somewhat close with Hurkacz here as well.

Hubert Hurkacz Recent Form
Already in the top 10 on the back of a surprisingly strong clay court season, Hurkacz has a chance to add some points this week in Halle.
Last season he had a mediocre grass season thanks to a tight loss at this tournament against Tallon Griekspoor and then a draw that pitted him against Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon.
That means a deep run (in the weaker half of this draw) in Germany could add some points to his total with very little to defend.
His penchant for playing well on grass is no surprise. He has what is probably the best serve of any of the major contenders on any given week on the ATP circuit.
The return game is still lackluster, and that’s why we saw him bow out here in a third-set tiebreak a year ago. Cobolli may be slightly easier to crack on return than a guy like Griekspoor, but he showed us he’s not a total rollover despite being pretty new to the lawns.
Flavio Cobolli Recent Form
As specialized of a surface as the grass is, I was pleasantly surprised by Cobolli’s competence in Stuttgart against the massive serving Struff. Not necessarily on return where he had little chance to find a break – it will be much of the same here – but more so on serve, where he certainly has the weapons from the line and with his groundstrokes to dictate play.
Now, Hurkacz is a better point starter than Struff. Thus, likely a better returner, but he still struggles in that regard plenty and the less aggressive return style may help Cobolli, who would probably be more off-put by the pace of the groundstrokes coming back at him from a returner like Struff.
With Cobolli unlikely to find a break against Hurkacz, the over does depend on whether he can extend sets in this matchup and if he loses a close set, whether he can avoid the early break in the second set that cost him the Struff match.
