It’s a big Wednesday from the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, as the rest of the second round needs to be played out so the entirety of the round of 16 can happen on another jam-packed day of tennis on Thursday. Let’s look at our Humbert vs Zhang prediction – two players we’ve previewed already this week.

Humbert vs Zhang Prediction: Back Zhang Again on Wednesday
Odds as of 2:00 am UK Time on April 10th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Zhang got it done for us on Tuesday and I’m going to trust him again in his second match. Does that make me foolish? Probably. He’s a volatile player and that means maintaining a high level consistently doesn’t come easy and neither does winning multiple matches consecutively.
That said, as we’ll go over again in a minute, he does have a surprisingly decent track record on the surface, and won’t be pushed around or intimidated by the pace from Humbert. It’s another situation where I don’t think him being the underdog is incorrect, just the degree to which he’s an underdog.

Ugo Humbert Recent Form
Opposing Humbert on Monday didn’t go all that well once he found his range and hit Federico Coria off the court, but we did see him look vulnerable in that opening set, and Zhang presents a different kind of animal.
I’m not sold just yet on Humbert’s clay court pedigree, despite him having two excellent weeks at high level Challenger Tour tournaments last year.
He still hits a very flat ball and his low-margin style can go wrong at any time, and on slower courts, it’s tough to win consistently without having at least some semblance of a secondary way to win points if you lose the plot with your hitting.
I do think the Frenchman has cooled off a bit as well since winning Dubai. There aren’t any wins that jump off the page and he seems to be trading wins and losses at the moment, so it’s tough to really believe the form is scintillating and tough to oppose.
Zhizhen Zhang Recent Form
Speaking of trading wins and losses of late, enter the world No. 49. Zhang’s style lends itself to being able to hang in matches with some of the best players on tour or losing Challenger matches as a big favorite.
He plays an ultra-aggressive game that also features impressive power. He showcased that against Marcos Giron on Tuesday in a match he led the vast majority of, even though he needed three sets after blowing a set-and-break lead (the aforementioned volatility in a nutshell).
Against a fellow aggressive and sometimes error-prone competitor, I’m happy to take a shot on 3.00 odds for him to emerge victorious.
Ugo Humbert vs Zhizhen Zhang H2H – Stat of the Match
The only time these two played was down under at the Australian Open back in January, where Humbert won in four sets. Zhang did look horrible in two of the first three (obviously winning the other) but was a fourth-set tiebreak away from forcing Humbert into a deciding set and making things far less comfortable for his 25-year-old counterpart.
In a match like this, it’s tough to trust the overall data. With each of them capable of producing such a wide range of results match-in, match-out, I know I may look stupid after the fact, but given the break even percentage here is just 32%, I can’t pass this one up.
