It must be nice to have connections to those that own the tournament’s license. Despite not having been among the world’s top-150 and having finished his 2024 season with a 2-11 record across the Challenger Tour and grand slam qualifying, Damm has been given a spot in this year’s Miami Open qualifying draw. It’s a big week for the lefty, seeing as he made the third round here last season when he was given a spot in the main draw.
Quite a jump from the ITF Tour tournaments he’d been playing to start 2025 in an effort to rebuild his ranking – which currently stands at No. 468.
The once highly touted prospect has never really lived up to the hype, failing to develop a game beyond his booming lefty serve. Now, that can be enough (just ask his opponents so far down on the ITF circuit, who have had a terrible time on return so far in 2025) here and there and at the lower levels, but it just hasn’t done the job when trying to play against tougher opponents.
Enter his compatriot, Holt. Now up to No. 116 in the world (and just a few spots off a new career high), the less powerful of the two Americans has had a great start to his season and stylistically should be able to cope with at least some of Damm’s pace, seeing as he’s a more of a counterpuncher and possesses a decent return game.
Brandon Holt Recent Form
This is probably Holt’s biggest advantage. Not only has he played the entire start of 2025 at a higher level (the Challenger Tour) than Damm, but he’s also been racking up wins.
Not only did he win a title in Thailand, but he spent February going from a semifinal in Manama to a final in Pune, before going one better again and winning the Bangalore title before heading back to North America.
Now, the turnaround from that final in Bangalore to his qualifying match in Indian Wells was incredibly quick and it showed as he was worn down by Damir Dzumhur – a player who prefers the slower conditions much more than he does anyway.
Last week he played an incredibly tight two tiebreak match with an ATP Tour pro in Rinky Hijikata and this is probably the most manageable opponent he’s had in about a month.
Martin Damm Recent Form
Damm began his season in mid-February and it has been a pretty successful start for him. The only issue? It’s come at the ITF Tour level against relative no-names and it’s hard to really give him all that much credit for the record he’s put together.
This will be his first real test of the season other than some talented, but raw, young players.
I went over his relatively one-dimensional game above and with Holt being one of the players who may be able to deal with his serve adeptly in this qualifying draw, I would say this is a tough assignment for the 21-year-old.
Brandon Holt vs Martin Damm H2H – Stat of the Match
The lone meeting between Holt and Damm was last year in Houston on “clay” courts (I use quotation marks because those courts played like hard courts).
