Much like the Hunter and Cristian match, I think that at a different hard-court tournament, the odds here would be pretty accurate. Dart is the more natural hard courter and more suited to the surface with a more attacking game.
With the courts playing much slower and the bounce being higher in Indian Wells though, the flat-hitting, low-net clearance game of the Brit is far more vulnerable.
These are not clay courts but play much closer to clay than almost any other hard courts out there. We know as courts slow and bounces get higher, Dart’s game becomes less and less effective.
Tough to believe she’s a fairly sizable favourite given that.
Harriet Dart Recent Form
Despite some early exits in Linz, Porto and Australian Open qualifying, Dart has showcased why she can be dangerous when playing on hard courts early in the season.
She went to the ITF Canberra final – a pretty stacked field for an ITF tournament – and then most recently managed to reach the semifinals in Cluj-Napoca as a qualifier.
The indoor hard courts in Romania were conducive to her style and the same goes for the conditions in Canberra.
Without a really big serve and natural power though, I think she’ll find herself struggling to hit through the courts and the strong defences of her opponent in this match, however.
Furthermore, she does tend to hit errors from time to time, thanks to a lower margin for error style that doesn’t see her leave an abundance of room between the net and the ball on her groundstrokes.
Darja Semenistaja Recent Form
Despite being more of a clay courter, Semenistaja has been more impressive in recent times on hard courts.
She hasn’t really played at the highest levels on the surface, but a 16-5 record across all levels to start the season is still pretty impressive.
She’s won an ITF tournament in Bangalore and a 125K event in Mumbai already in 2024, with the latter likely being her most impressive result at a hard-court tournament in her career.
Now, I wouldn’t go as far as to say she’s now a strong hard courter. She’s still underpowered and we can still see some iffy losses on her resume.
That said, the competence is growing and Indian Wells is probably the most forgiving of hard court events for a more natural clay courter like her.
Harriet Dart vs Darja Semenistaja H2H – Stat of the Match
No prior meeting between Dart and Semenistaja to assess.
Blended hard court elo ratings have Dart about 70 points ahead of her Latvian counterpart. I’m actually surprised Semenistaja has closed the gap to that point, as I expected that number to be a bit larger.
Given that it’s a difference under 75 points and the conditions probably close the gap between them even more, I’m happy to be on Semenistaja’s side here at the odds on offer.
