Grigor Dimitrov vs Fabian Marozsan Prediction: Clay Courts to Help Underdog Close Gap
- Predictions: Over 37.5 Games & Marozsan to win
- Best Odds: 1.93 & 3.46
- Bookmaker: Pinnacle
- Stakes: 2/10 & 2/10
Odds as at 3:20 am UK Time on May 29th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
If ever there was an underdog at 3.00 odds or better to trust, it has to be the ascendant Hungarian who has proven himself across surfaces, has an extremely well-rounded game, and is on a surface he plays well on and that the favorite tends to struggle on more than any other.
Marozsan’s serve isn’t particularly weak, he hits both his forehand and backhand to all parts of the court and plays with variety. Those are all things that help with constructing points – a key on slow clay courts.
Contrast that with Dimitrov, who tends to hit a flatter ball and play a more basic aggressive, offensively geared game that is still effective, especially with the talent he possesses, but loses some of its potency on the dirt.
I’ll split my stake to diversify risk, backing a close match via the over, but also looking to exploit the poor pricing of the higher-risk moneyline market. My Dimitrov vs Marozsan prediction is for Marozsan to win and Over 37.5 games.
Grigor Dimitrov Recent Form
The world No. 10 has been pretty solid this year, racking up deep runs throughout the hard court season and only losing to some of the best players on the planet (and Nuno Borges, somehow).
The shift to clay has seen him take a slight step backward, however, which isn’t exactly a surprise. He’s still gone 5-3, but 80% of those wins have come against hard courters or Challenger Tour players, with the mercurial and out-of-form Miomir Kecmanovic representing the best clay court win on his CV.
He’s still the more talented player in the matchup, but I do think the delta between him and Marozsan narrows on the clay much more than the odds here would indicate.
Fabian Marozsan Recent Form
Slow start to the season, a great month of March, and now a patch of mediocre-at-best form again.
Considering he tends to hit smaller targets and can be prone to missing his spots and spraying errors as a result, it’s obvious that his game could still use a bit of refinement.
Yet unlike many up-and-comers or young guns on the big stage, Marozsan seems to play his best tennis at Masters events and grand slams. That’s comforting to me, since he’ll be playing on the biggest stage clay tennis has to offer and against a top-10 opponent.
If he can play with any semblance of rally tolerance, land a decent number of first serves, and execute his drop shot well after working Dimitrov into the outer thirds of the court, he should be able to keep things close and pull off the upset.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Fabian Marozsan H2H – Stat of the Match
Despite being on tour for most of the last year, Marozsan is still a relative newcomer, so he’s yet to cross paths with Dimitrov.
Luckily for him it’s on a surface he plays well on and the one that is probably toughest for the aggressive Bulgarian.
