David Goffin vs Jaume Munar Prediction: Munar More Capable on Hard Courts Than Many Realise
- Prediction: Munar to win
- Best Odds: 2.05
- Bookmaker: Pinnacle
- Stakes: 3/10
Odds updated at 12:30 am UK Time on August 19th, 2024.
This selection is going to go a bit against the grain, but it’s a match in which I believe the wrong man is the slight favourite.
Yes, Munar prefers clay courts, but, unlike other clay courters who are almost specialists on the surface, he can translate his game to hard courts. That holds especially true if playing someone like Goffin, who isn’t exactly a dominant player at this stage of his career.
I also like his movement, defensive abilities and ball retrieval skills against a declining Belgian who can, at times, struggle to generate a whole lot of offence.
Finally, though he will have had two days off since playing his semifinal on Friday at the Cary Challenger, I’m still not sold on Goffin coming off a somewhat long week heading into this first round in fairly hot and humid conditions in North Carolina in August against someone who enjoys prolonging rallies and playing physical tennis. Our Goffin vs Munar prediction is for Munar to win.

David Goffin Recent Form
The 32-year-old now ranked 92nd in the world has had a rather interesting summer. He’s beaten a talented player like Denis Shapovalov, but also lost to an upstart hard court player in Flavio Cobolli, really struggled to close out a clay court specialist in Camilo Ugo Carabelli and even lost to the out-of-form in 2024 Max Purcell.
He did have a few nice wins last week down at the Challenger level, but I’m not sure any of the players he beat possessed the rally tolerance and ability to grind that Munar does.
While credit is certainly due for finding ways to win when one’s game is on the decline, I’m just not sure he deserves to be a favourite in this match simply because he’s probably more comfortable on the surface.
Jaume Munar Recent Form
Though he’s just 4-6 on outdoor hard courts so far this year, Munar has been pretty competitive in most of those losses. He lost his first match of the year from a set up – as an underdog – then lost in Auckland from a set up and lost a tight tiebreak – again as an underdog and against a more natural hard courter. Then just last week as a sizable underdog against Jack Draper, the Spaniard managed to extend the match all the way to a third set tiebreak.
He’s not as clay court dependent as most think. His serve is a bit stronger than many other clay court centric players, he doesn’t have a lot of power, but he can move the ball around the court and still dictate points behind his serve and while sometimes he struggles to close matches, we’ve seen him be far more competitive than the market anticipates he will be on the surface.
Now playing someone that is likely going to struggle to hit through him and that he can certainly outlast, I’m going to back him at underdog odds in this one.
David Goffin vs Jaume Munar H2H – Stat of the Match
Oddly enough, this is the first time the two veteran players and tour-level stalwarts in the past few years have played one another.
