I’m going to go for a third straight favourite of the week, despite the disappointments of the last few days.
This time it’s in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where a former NCAA player is taking on a journeyman who may prefer clay courts, but is just fine on hard courts and with the way these courts tend to play, he’ll be just fine given the conditions.
Perez is having what one could construe as one of the better weeks of his career, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing and I’m not sure a win against an erratic young gun and another against a player that is on the edge of retirement from the sport are enough to convince me he should be a sub-4 game underdog.
There’s enough of a gap here talent wise to justify a bet on the Bulgarian.
Dimitar Kuzmanov Recent Form
I alluded to the fact that he’s more of a clay court player than hard courter above, but Kuzmanov has still been competitive at this level for most of the season on the quicker surfaces as well.
He won a title in Astana in July and while it wasn’t against the toughest opposition, it’s not like Perez is beating the doors down on the Challenger circuit either.
Even earlier in the season, Kuzmanov was able to play some fairly decent hard court professionals closely, barely losing to the likes of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Arthur Rinderknech – both of whom are fringe tour-level guys on hard courts.
Further, he was undervalued in his first match in Mexico, somehow only being a three game favourite against another relative no name in Felix Crowin, handling him with ease.
I think we’re seeing another disrespectful number here and am happy to back the veteran.
Alfredo Perez Recent Form
Though he’s amassed a 16-5 record in the little time he’s played in 2024, Perez’s wins have come primarily in qualifying draws on the Challenger Tour or down on the lower ITF Tour.
When we isolate for main draw matches at this level, we see a reduction in his hold percentage and his hold plus break percentage falls below the 100% threshold – which isn’t all that impressive.
Sure, the sample size is relatively small, but isn’t that an issue in and of itself? He simply doesn’t have what it takes to hack it at this level.
Beating Justin Engel is impressive, but the young gun from Germany has been pretty hit or miss in his time playing professionally and that was the case the other night. Other than that, there simply hasn’t been anything impressive from the 27-year-old.
Dimitar Kuzmanov vs Alfredo Perez H2H – Stat of the Match
With so little experience at this level for Perez and Kuzmanov being a mainstay on the Challenger Tour for the last several years, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that these two haven’t come up against one another until now.
