I expect 3 sets to be played, and even though this is the first meeting between these ladies, it won’t be the last. We have two top-10-ranked women competing in this match, and they are both so young that we have to hope we see this clash happen again.

On clay, I mentioned the other day that I thought Zheng would easily take a set of Osaka, I just gave Naomi too much credit for being able to respond. Zheng walked all over Osaka, and I was rather angry and disappointed because I hate being wrong, and Naomi flopped.

My concern for Coco comes from all the tennis she has played in Rome over the last week. Gauff lost the first set against Badosa, so she needed to come back with a strong effort to reach the quarterfinals. Jacqui Cristian took her to three sets and Coco has played two doubles matches that went three sets and then some. 

I get that Coco is 20 and this is the age to handle this type of workload but it is a lot. She will have to be on the court at noon in Rome tomorrow for her doubles clash, and this match doesn’t even start until 20:30 local time.

It will be interesting to see how she navigates this schedule, and Zheng has got to be aware of it so she should keep Gauff moving. 

I told you the history of Zheng on clay in her last match against Osaka, and I don’t think I will ever doubt she can win a set on this surface against anyone.

Coco might be ranked 3rd in the WTA World Rankings, but Zheng is right behind her with a 7 attached to her name.

COCO GAUFF RECENT FORM

Coco Gauff simply loves coming to Italia, and can you blame her? The only two clay semifinal appearances in her career have come at the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome.

Last year’s clay season was one to forget, as she produced a 7 – 4 record and didn’t make a single appearance in a quarterfinal.

QINWEN ZHENG RECENT FORM

I will repeat what I said about Zheng from the match with Osaka. Over the last seven years, Zheng has won six titles on clay dating back to 2020 and has always produced a winning record on clay year after year.

There was some concern for her early exit in Madrid with a thigh injury, but she showed no signs of it in her match with Osaka.
