French Open Analysis: What city has produced the most Roland-Garros champions since 1891?
We have analyzed all the winners of the major tennis tournaments since the late 19th century to find out what city has produced the most tennis champions.
MAJOR TENNIS TOURNAMENTS – COMBINED RESULTS
If the results from French Open (& French Championship), US Open (& U.S.National Championship), Wimbledon (Amateur and Open Era) and Australian Open (& Australasian Championship) since 1881 are combined, Sydney has produced the most individual winners – 27. To be specific, Sydney-born champions won French Open 8 times, Australian Open 23 times, US Open 8 times, and Wimbledon 7 times.
In second place is New York (23 winners) followed by Paris (20 winners), Melbourne (17 winners) and Moscow (15 winners).
When looking at countries, the United States has produced the most individual winners - 254 - as well as the most titles won - 1223.
OPEN ERA RESULTS
If only the Open Era (1968 onwards) is considered, Moscow is first since it produced 15 winners across French Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open.
Sydney is in second place (14 winners) followed by Prague (10 winners).
When looking at the overall titles won across players born in a given city in the Open era, Prague is in first place with 96 Grand Slam titles. Sydney is in second place (70 titles) followed by Belgrade (45 titles)
If countries are considered, the United States has the most titles across players born there - 96, followed by Australia (59) and Czech Republic (31).
FRENCH OPEN RESULTS
The places of birth of all the winners in singles, doubles and mixed Rolland-Garos tournaments were collected and according to the results of the analysis:
- Paris has produced the most Roland-Garros individual winners - 17 winners (and 80 titles in total)
- Prague is in second place, having produced 11 winners (and 28 titles in total)
- Sydney is in third place - it produced 8 winners who won 17 titles
If only the Open Era (1968 onwards) is taken into consideration:
- Prague has produced the most French Open winners - 9 (and 23 titles)
- Moscow and Barcelona are tied for second place - both have produced 6 winners
- Sydney is in third place, having produced 5 winners in the Open Era
If total titles in the Open Era (since 1968) are summed up:
- Prague-born champions hold the most titles - 23 in total
- Manacor is second with 14 titles, Barcelona and Minsk are tied for third place with 11 titles each
- The United States have produced the most French open winners (if countries are taken into consideration) - 80, while France-born players have won the most titles - 194.
METHODOLOGY
The analysis includes all of the male and female winners (singles, doubles, mixed) since the inception of the respective tournaments and its various iterations (French Championship, French Open, Australasian Championship, Australian Open, Wimbledon Championship Amateur Era, Wimbledon Championship Open Era, U.S. National Championship, US Open)
If a winner has won multiple titles, they would still only count as 1 while calculating for the different winners a city has produced - e.g, Martina Navratilova has won the French Open 11 times, but in our research, she would only count as 1 winner born in Prague
Citizenship of the winners is not taken into account, only their place of birth
Titles for victories in doubles are counted separately (e.g, if Serena and Venus Williams won the title for best female doubles match, it would be counted as two title wins for the United States in the overall count)
The list of winners was sourced from the official pages of the tournaments & their respective Wikipedia pages
The players whose place of birth is not known were omitted from the analysis; if only their country of birth was known, it was included only in the count of the winners per countries
