Now, we unsuccessfully opposed Bautista Agut in his match on Tuesday (beating the closing line beautifully and having our underdog win the opening set) and lose, but that won’t stop me from going back to the well on Wednesday.
I think it’s important to avoid continually opposing someone because one is being stubborn and not willing to believe someone is playing well. I don’t think that’s the case here.
Let me explain. First things first, the handicap wasn’t that far off on Tuesday. Bautista Agut did look underpowered, his serve was vulnerable and he was overvalued as the favourite when we bet him. Believe it or not, he saved 12 straight break points from the beginning of the second set into the third and converted most of his own. Distribution and key points went his way at an almost unsustainable rate.
The other factor? Well, when you’re playing in colder temperatures on the slowest courts available on the tour this week, you’re going to play a lot of points. When you have to save 12 straight break points in a set and a half, you’re also playing long close games. That leads to tough, physical matches. His contest with Bu Yunchaokete ended up being nearly three hours long and now he’s being asked to come back the next day and play again. The kicker? He’s taking on Comesana who lives for long points, long games and extended matches.
We saw Bautista Agut nearly blow a *5-2 double break lead in the third set on Tuesday as his gas tank neared empty. I don’t love his chances coming back against someone that can extend rallies and that he won’t be able to hit through if this one also passes the two-hour mark.
Francisco Comesana Recent Form
It’s worth noting that Comesana also played a lengthy match on Tuesday that lasted over 2.5 hours. He’s also someone that has backed up those kinds of lengthy matches on clay many times in the past and is over a decade younger than his veteran Spanish counterpart.
Comesana at this stage also has the better serve and with him being more likely to endure the rigours of a lengthy match, I’m confident in my assessment that he should be a much larger favourite, closer to 65% than 55%.
The forehand has plenty of spin to protect it from being attackable and even if it didn’t he’s not playing someone that can really punish balls that are sitting up anyway in these conditions at this stage of his career.
With his ball retrieval skills also well suited to handle the way Bautista Agut can still spread the court, he should be well equipped to defeat the veteran and reach his second tour level quarterfinal of the season on clay. Should he be able to, I think he’ll be very happy to have his Thursday off as well.
Roberto Bautista Agut Recent Form
Went over the poor form of the veteran in the last preview featuring him to start the week and I mentioned above that he was pretty fortunate to make it through the opening round to even be here.
All that analysis remains true here. He hasn’t won much this year, his ability to play front foot tennis has regressed in a big way, his serve is as vulnerable as ever and the fact that he had to play such a long match on Tuesday only complicates things more.
I’ll oppose him once more here without skipping a beat.
Francisco Comesana vs Roberto Bautista Agut H2H – Stat of the Match
This will be the first meeting between the players separated by 12 years in age. Worth keeping in mind that Comesana is still pretty new to this level and had primarily been a Challenger Tour player until last season.
