Eva Lys is considerably favored to defeat her German counterpart with odds at -225, which is a bit pricey if you ask me!

While I expect Lys to escape this match with the win, will it be that easy?

Jule Niemeier has three wins this season, and Sorana Cirstea is the highest ranked victory of the trio. Niemeier started this week ranked 120th on the WTA Tour, and was barely favored against 202nd-ranked Vanedwinkel.

Eva Lys was listed at -175 yesterday against Sasnovich, but was challenged in the first set because neither player could serve tea! Sloppy service games led to seven breaks in the first set and three more in the second frame.

Lys was a double-fault machine serving up 8 of them in the opening round of qualifying, and those issues could have easily cost her the match. 

With more sloppy play expected, this match will need three sets to decide a winner and will be hard to watch unfold. Niemeier knows she can defeat Lys from their two previous experiences, although the Germans have faced each other in three years.

I don’t expect either of these two to be around much longer regardless of which advances to the main draw. This WTA1000 event is loaded with quality players who will easily dismantle Lys or Niemeier when they land in the field.

We’re going the distance so buckle up for an ugly, long match. The unforced errors will add up, and holding serve will be a tribulation all day!

The 23-year-old Kyiv native isn’t going to overwhelm anyone with power, and if her service game isn’t in check, it could be a long day for the favorite.

Lys went 30 – 17 in 2024 producing the first season with a winning record on all three surfaces.

Jule Niemeier is 3 – 5 to start the 2025 campaign, and hasn’t beaten any opponent ranked in the top 110.

Niemeier produced a 34 – 28 record in 2024, and climbed to 89th on the WTA Tour before dropping six of the last 8 outings last season, falling out of the top 100.

Eva Lys and Jule Niemeier have met twice on the WTA Tour. 

Lys retired from their first clash at Zagreb in 2022 after only three games, giving Niemeier the unofficial win (Niemeier went on to win the event). Three months later at Lausanne, Niemeier swept Lys in the round of 16.
