Eva Lys isn’t used to being listed as a -295 favorite in a quarterfinal match but the German is the heavy chalk to earn a semifinal spot in this WTA500 event.
It was Women’s Night on T2 last night and I soaked in the Kessler vs. Lys affair which was quite a match that went the distance. I think we all know that Eva Lys isn’t going to offer an overpowering serve and Kessler broke the German six times in the match.
Lys produced only one ace and won 52% of her first service points but hit a heavy ball on this surface in Osaka. I respect her game but this match against 188th-ranked Aoi Ito might be tougher than most people think.
Aoi Ito has taken out Emma Bektas, Arianne Hartono, Sofia Kenin, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Japan Women’s Open and is coming off a tournament win at Nanao played on the grass in Japan. I didn’t even know they had grass tournaments in Asia, HA!
That was a WTA50-level event with five wins to give the Japanese native her highest ranking at 188th since joining the WTA Tour.
Aoi Ito will not be intimidated by Lys’ service game and can hold her own with her serve long enough to keep this match close. A +4.5, I’ll give Ito the respect of a bet for this quarterfinal affair at the Japan Women’s Open on Ito to cover the handicap.
EVA LYS RECENT FORM
Eva Lys is appearing in a fifth quarterfinal match this campaign and the 118th-ranked player on the WTA Tour hasn’t won an event for two years.
Lys is small in stature and needs to rely on power strokes from the baseline to retrieve points throughout her service games.
Lys is 13 – 6 on hard courts and a 30 – 16 record ensures she will produce a winning record for the third straight campaign and fourth in five years.
AOI ITO RECENT FORM
Aoi Ito is riding a 9 – 0 streak and is 4 – 0 at the Japan Women’s Open. The Japanese native has banked 50 wins in 2024 and has gained nearly 200 spots in the WTA Rankings after opening the season at 383rd. (Currently 188th)
Playing mostly at the ITF/Challenger level, Ito has two tournament wins this season and just snapped off a quick 5 – 0 in her only event played on the grass at Nanao to win one of two events this year.
Aoi Ito is 45 – 20 on hard courts and hasn’t played a match on clay in three years.
LYS VS ITO H2H – STAT OF THE MATCH
Eva Lys and Aoi Ito have never met on the WTA Tour.
