Of the two relatively young Americans in this tilt, I’ll take the favourite, who I actually believe is a stronger favourite than these odds would imply.
Braswell is a decent player, but I just don’t see the same talent as I do with the up-and-coming Quinn, whose journey has been a slow burn to say the least, but who has started to show signs of the promise that made people believe that he may have top-50 potential.
We have the bigger game, the higher ceiling and what I’d consider better form once you look at who each of these guys has played and beaten in the last few weeks. That’s enough to get me involved in this match on the handicaps.
Ethan Quinn Recent Form
After an incredibly poor few seasons that can only be labelled as underachieving, the 20-year-old has plays his third quarterfinal in his last five tournaments entered on Friday. A win would mark his second semifinal of the season at the Challenger level and it’d be the first since Cleveland back in early February.
Now, I don’t want to read too much into the stronger form the last few months as he’s playing during a downtime in the season in North America where fields tend to be weaker, but consistent wins are certainly encouraging to see.
He’s still yet to break the top-200 in the world rankings, but the fact remains he has a powerful game and a lot of potential.
I have him closer to the 1.45-1.50 range pricing wise, so there’s plenty of value on the 1.60 and, as a result, on the handicaps of -2.5 games or -3 games, where we should be seeing this sitting at -3.5 games.
Micah Braswell Recent Form
The Texas Longhorns product has had a decent summer on the professional circuit, using this week’s four wins in qualifying and the main draw to propel himself into the top-500 for the first time.
That said, when I look at his game, I simply can’t find anything he does much better than his younger compatriot and other than a pair of wins against the big serving Beibit Zhukayev, I can’t really find many quality wins on his resume.
This is a tough spot for Braswell as he’s taking on a player that was seen as one of the potential future hopes of American tennis. Quinn had been a disappointment on the whole until this fall, but has started to turn things around and his powerful game is starting to help him rack up the wins.
Braswell would be well served trying to exploit Quinn’s lack of movement if he wants
