Katie Boulter reached the second round of the Australian Open for only the second time last season and this will be her third attempt at a third-round showing. 

The line setters seem to like the Brit’s chances but being favored doesn’t necessarily mean it will be an easy day for Boulter. The Leicestershire, England native reached a career-high 24th ranking in November last season and she started the week at 25th.

Boulter started the 2024 campaign competing in the United Cup and a 2 – 1 record was the result including one loss to Iga Swiatek. We can forgive that defeat but the Brit took a set from Swiatek before the loss, at least!

With Boulter listed at -135, I was pleased as punch to the mere -105 on the -1 which is rare. Usually, we have to get closer to -110 and -115 in those cases and I am not letting that go unnoticed. 

Kudermetova has been bounced in the first round of the Australian Open three times in six attempts at the Major Tournament including last season.

I was wondering how Kudermetova would look in 2025 after finishing the 2024 campaign as she did. Losing the final four outings with first-round exits wasn’t the best way to finish a season, and the loss at Brisbane to open the 2025 season didn’t help matters.

Veronika Kudermetova ended the 2024 season with an 18 – 25 record with that losing streak I mentioned above to finish the campaign.

Kudermetova has seen the ranking drop to 75th after being in the top 20 in 2023.

With wins over Cocciareto and Osorio at Hobart, Kudermetova has a 3 – 1 record to open the 2025 season after the first-round win over Gadecki.

KATIE BOULTER RECENT FORM

Katie Boulter has to win this match to level her confidence because another second-round exit at this Major Tournament will be devastating. As a slight favorite, Boulter didn’t look convincing against Rebecca Marino in the first round being taken to three sets but a win is a win.

Boulter completed a fifth consecutive season with a winning record last year going 38 – 23 winning two tournaments and a second straight title at Nottingham.
