Emma Navarro eased past her first opponent at the National Bank Open and the American will face Marta Kostyuk as the favorite on Friday in Toronto.

In my Svitolina vs Kostyuk preview yesterday, you can quote me as saying, “Marta can win this match and this underdog has plenty of bite along with that bark.” 

I handed out the Over 2.5 Sets prop at +140 and when Marta won the first set I knew we were in good shape to see a 3-set affair. Svitolina responded with a 6 – 2 second set and the game count was tied at 8 – 8 going to the final frame. 

Kostyuk broke Svitolina to go up 3 – 1 and the final break of the match happened right before the two Ukrainian teammates and friends hugged at the net. Kostyuk took a 6 – 2 third-set victory to the third round as a +135 underdog against Svitolina and the same offer is on the table for this affair.

Emma Navarro carries the 8-seed at the National Bank Open and the American is ranked 15th on the WATA Tour. Kostyuk entered the main draw as the 11-seed in section 3 of the bottom half of the bracket and the Ukrainian is only five spots behind Navarro ranked 20th.

This is another circumstance where I see nothing less than a 3-set match that requires extra effort for one of these women to reach the quarters in Toronto. With +140 odds on the Over 2.5 Sets action, you can put it on the board because we’re going the distance.

Emma Navarro was a considerable favorite against Magda Linette and a 6 – 2, 6 – 4 win in 94 minutes sent the American to the third round.

Navarro was 20 – 7 on hardcourts before the clay and grass portions of the campaign and she pocketed her first WTA-level tourney win at Hobart in the second event of the 2024 season. That came after a run to the semifinal at Auckland to start the campaign and Emma has clinched her third straight season without a losing record on all three surfaces.

Kostyuk was pushed to a third-set as we expected and Marta is again being told that she isn’t good enough to win this match as a +135 underdog. 

Marta is 17 – 6 on hardcourts this season and for the eighth straight year the Ukrainian will have a winning record on the surface. With one title in 2023 at Austin, Marta could provide a Cinderella Story run to this title.
