With odds flying past -700, Navarro hasn’t been playing her best tennis lately but the wildcard entrant carries the 1-seed in this event.

Anna Blinkova had the pleasure of dismantling Simona Halep in the second round and she has a win against Navarro from two meetings.

Emma Navarro’s confidence took a big hit last week after getting hammered by Shuai Zhang in Beijing and this appearance at a WTA250-level event is a bit strange for the 8th-ranked American.

When Navarro was announced as the wildcard for this WTA250 tournament it made me wonder what she is doing in Hong Kong. Emma is the only player ranked inside the top 50 competing in Hong Kong making her the clear favorite to take this Challenger event in China.

Clara Burel, ranked 56th on the WTA Tour, is the next highest-ranked player in this event and she didn’t even make it out of the first round.

Anna Blinkova is ranked 78th on the WTA Tour and she had no trouble dealing with Simona Halep in the previous round. Simona Halep should be home by now and that would be a good place for her to stay because that ship has sailed!

While a win over Halep isn’t much of an accomplishment for Blinkova, Navarro needs tp regain her confidence after the massive disappointment in Beijing. The loss to Shuai Zhang, who had lost 24 straight outings entering the China Open zapped Navarro and her top-10 status could be in doubt without a run to this tournament title as a clear favorite.

I’ll point to the total to stay under 19.5 games expecting Navarro to land a 6 – 4, 6 – 2 win to advance to the semifinal in Hong Kong.

Emma Navarro is ranked 8th on the WTA Tour and that is a big spot to be in with the WTA Championships around the corner. The Top 8 players on tour get to compete in that high-profile tournament and Emma is holding on to that spot by a thread.

The loss to Zhang in Beijing was a big disappointment after the loss to Sabalenka in the semifinal of the US Open.

Navarro is 22 – 12 on hard courts this season with a 54 – 22 record in 2024.

ANNA BLINKOVA RECENT FORM

Anna Blinkova was 0 – 10 entering this WTA250 event in Hong Kong but she has found a pair of wins over Peangtarn Plipuech and Simona Halep this week. 

Blinkova hasn’t lost more than 2 games in either affair and knows she is up against the wall today as a heavy underdog playing the favorite to win the tourney.

Blinkova is 9 – 14 on hard courts this season and has a record of 13 – 26 in 2024.

Navarro and Blinkova have split wins from two meetings on the WTA over the last year.

In 2023, the two first met on clay in Strasbourg and Blinkova earned the straight-sets win over the American.

At the US Open this year Navarro exacted some revenge and leveled the series at 1 – 1 with a straight-sets win in the final Major of the 2024 campaign.
