Can we call it a Belgian surprise if Mertens upsets Shnaider?
Should Diana Shnaider be favored at all?
Those were my first two questions to answer, and I am more than happy to see Mertens at +100 to get us a cashed ticket.
Shnaider got manhandled against the Belgian native in Monterrey two seasons ago, and the way Shnaider is playing lately, I will fade her until the cows come home.
Ranked 13th on the WTA Tour, Shnaider hasn’t earned that number as far as I am concerned.
This is Diana Shnaider’s tenth tournament appearance in 2025, and two wins have been the tops for the 21-year-old southpaw. She hasn’t won more than one match at any event since the Australian Open in January, and that’s good enough for a 13th rank? Sorry, not for me!
Elise Mertens hasn’t won a clay title since the pair she earned during the 2018 campaign, and Shnaider can usually hold her own on this surface.
If you are wondering about the prospect of a three-set affair, I can see that coming, and the +138 odds on the Over 2.5 sets prop hold some value. Shnaider has plenty of clay experience in only a few years, and six titles on this surface give her a fighter’s chance to take a set from Mertens.
Mertens getting past Shnaider at +100 will be the best bet when the dust settles in Stuttgart, so ride the Belgian into the quarterfinals.
ELISE MERTENS RECENT FORM
Elise Mertens hasn’t won a title on clay since 2018, but the 29-year-old Belgian native has produced a winning record on the dirt over the last five seasons.
Mertens defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 7 – 6, 6 – 2 in the opening round to bring her record to 2 – 1 on the clay this season.
DIANA SHNAIDER RECENT FORM
Diana Shnaider needed three sets to get past Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of the Porsche Grand Prix.
Shnaider dropped the first set and had to mount a comeback to reach the second round, although she has not won two outings in any event since January’s Australian Open.
Shnadier has six clay titles to her credit, two of which were won last season at the Paris Challenger and in Budapest.
MERTENS VS SHNAIDER HTH – STAT OF THE MATCH
Elise Mertens defeated Diana Shnaider in their only meeting in Monterrey, Mexico, during the 2023 campaign, 6 – 0, 6 – 4.
The winner of this match will face Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals of the Porsche Grand Prix.
