We’ve entered the clay court season as April begins, but the WTA’s biggest event this week is playing on the green clay that tends to play a bit quicker, providing a great transition from the typically faster hard courts to the typically slower dirt.

Bogdan’s win probability is 40% while Cocciaretto is favoured to win at 1.53 odds. The handicap is 2.5 games and the total games line is 21.5.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Ana Bogdan (Credit One Charleston Open) Prediction: Underdog Undervalued in Opening Round Clash

Odds as at 1:30 am UK Time on April 2nd, 2024. Odds may now differ.

It appears as though Cocciaretto is starting to be overvalued on a relatively consistent basis by the betting markets. I’m not sure why they love her so much, but as I’ll go over in a minute, this isn’t the first time in recent weeks I’ll be opposing her.

She’s a quality player, but being priced as a top talent, especially considering Bogdan is also a strong player and probably has a bit more to her game when it comes to the offensive side of her game.

If you’re going to offer me odds implying she only wins this match 40% of the time, I’m happy to take on that bet.

Read on for more expert insights.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto Recent Form

It’s been a solid season for the former top-30 player, who has dropped down to the 125k level to help her find some success and rack up some victories.

She actually won a tournament in this very city at that level a few weeks ago. Now, that was a more manageable field to navigate and came on hard courts, but along with last week’s effort in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, makes for a successful few weeks.

That run in San Luis Potosi is also important though. It gave an indication that the market may slightly overvalue the Italian in certain spots. I had a bet or two against her on a few occasions when she played decent competition who were priced as though they stood very little chance. Tamara Zidansek came with a point of upsetting her, while Nadia Podoroska did manage to do the job in a three-hour battle. They were both given between a 20% and 30% chance and were obviously more competitive.

That appears to be the case yet again here. Cocciaretto has the ability to play long points, avoid errors and grind opponents down, but she lacks anything to help her dominate and be valued as a large favourite against other strong players.

Ana Bogdan Recent Form

It’s been a season of tough draws for the veteran in 2024. From Marta Kostyuk, who is having her best start to a season, to young upstarts like Brenda Fruhvirtova and Diana Shnaider, Bogdan has been tasked with some very talented players in the early stages of tournaments.

I suppose that’s to be expected when one plays almost exclusively 500 level events and higher. The one 250 she took part in, in her native Romania, saw her reach the final, losing to Karolina Pliskova after a week of very long matches that caught up to her.

She’s got another tough test early in a week here, but Cocciaretto is in a similar boat as her in terms of being a solid player with a decent forehand, but doesn’t possess any overwhelming weapon to really take her to the next level.

That makes this a relatively even matchup. Throw in the fact that Cocciaretto has been viewed by the market in a far more optimistic light than my handicaps have tended to yield and I’m happy to oppose her at nice odds with a strong player like Bogdan.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Ana Bogdan H2H – Stat of the Match

Bogdan has the lone win in a match between these two, back in 2021 at the French Open on a surface more favourable than this one to Cocciaretto, but the strides that the Italian has made in the years since that match make that a tough barometer to rely on when looking at pricing up this match.

It does prove, however, that Bogdan is a capable all-courter with a decent enough talent level to keep things competitive, even if Cocciaretto has improved as a player.
