Elena Rybakina and Qinwen Zheng face pressure after losing their opening group stage outings at the year-end WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia.

Rybakina returned from a 2-month layoff to return for the high-profile event and Jasmine Paolini handed the Kazakh native a straight-sets loss.

Qinwen Zheng faced the World’s #1 Aryna Sabalenka in the first match of purple group play and the Chinese native was also defeated in straight sets.

EJ Garr’s Elena Rybakina vs Qinwen Zheng prediction features odds at +140 which you can find below.

Elena Rybakina looked in good shape against Jasmine Paolini and had some chances to win the opening frame on Saturday to begin WTA Finals action. The Kazakh native hadn’t been seen since the US Open and there were concerns she would make the trip to Saudi Arabia.

Rybakina had chances to break Paolini at 4 – 4 and 5 – 5 but Paolini held serve and a tie-break was needed to settle the first set. With so much weight on every game and set in this year-end event, a loss from this affair will likely see their tournament end with one match left in group play.

I hope you took advantage of my offer for Saturday’s Rybakina vs. Paolini match. I posted the Paolini +3.5 handicap questioning the ability of Rybakina to jump back into action after the 2-month layoff and the Italian showed up big!

Rybakina still has a big shot and has beaten Qinwen Zheng two times in their previous meetings which I’ll discuss below. Finding any confidence for Rybakina will be big because she flopped in Cancun at the WTA Finals last year.

Qinwen Zheng has been playing with confidence lately outside of dealing with Sabalenka! Zheng is 17 – 4 over the last 21 outings and three of those losses are against hated rival Sabalenka.

With so much on the line, a straight-set loss would be devastating for either of them so buckle up because we’re going the distance!

ELENA RYBAKINA RECENT FORM

Elena Rybakina is 1 – 3 since the loss to Barbora Krecjikova in the semifinal at Wimbledon.

Rybakina played one match in Cincinnati and one match at the US Open before as part of the North American swing and the back injury left her absent from the Asian swing.

Rybakina is 23 – 6 on hard courts this year and has a record of 41 – 10 in 2024.

QINWEN ZHENG RECENT FORM

Winwen Zheng is 28 – 5 since the magical run on clay to earn two titles on the surface. After running to the Palermo Open title, the Chinese native went perfect in Paris and is now the proud owner of an Olympic Gold Medal!

Since the beginning of the North American swing, Zheng is 17 – 4 and needs one win to claim victory #50 for the 2024 campaign (49 – 17).

Zheng is 29 – 11 on hard courts this year and went 4 – 0 last week in Tokyo to lift her third trophy before the WTA Finals.

RYBAKINA VS ZHENG H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Elena Rybakina is 2 – 0 against Qinwen Zheng.

In 2022 at Wimbledon, Rybakina earned a straight-sets win over Zheng in the round of 16 and went on to lift the Major hardware in London.

Last season in Beijing, Rybakina went to China and came out of the match with another straight-set win over the hometown favorite.
