I hope you enjoyed my call on Mladenovic to upset Arango in three sets yesterday because you were paid handsomely for the calls!

I am calling for another upset in Brazil today because this match is on clay and Makarova can handle her business against Jorge on this surface. I am honestly surprised that Jorge is favored in this contest but I will gladly oblige the line setters with a play on Makarova to land in the second round.

All four of Makarova’s titles have been won on the dirt although the one title that Jorge has on clay came in Brazil last year.

I still give the edge to Makarova despite the loss to Riera in Argentina last week. Makarova was a big underdog at +270 and pushed the Argentinian to three sets before bowing out in the second round.

Since returning to South American clay, Jorge has won two matches at the Colina Challenger and lost the last two outings. Wins over Pigossi and Fita Boluda aren’t going to impress me because I have been covering those two plenty lately, and we know they are easy victims.

Ultimately, it all comes down to Makarova excelling on clay and getting past Jorge. Being favored doesn’t make Jorge the better tennis player as we just found out yesterday with Mladenovic being the ‘dog against Arango.
