We’re into the second week of the last major of the season. The U.S. Open is getting down to the nitty gritty and for our first preview from the men’s draw, we’ll look at Jack Draper vs Tomas Machac.

Machac’s win probability is only 32%, while Draper is favoured to win at 1.42 odds. The handicap is 4.5 games and the total games line is 37.

Jack Draper vs Tomas Machac Prediction: Draper a Deserved Favourite for Quarterfinal Berth

This match is the perfect example of why betting good prices is important. Earlier on, when these odds were released, I would’ve certainly had a bet on the -3.5 and -4 game handicaps for Draper. Now at -4.5, it’s not quite as tempting.

Machac plays a high-risk, high-reward style that is fairly slap-happy and can produce plenty of winners, but also result in plenty of unforced errors.

Draper, on the other hand, combines his power and ability to generate offence and cheap points on serve with plenty of topspin to stick around in longer rallies. Draper has also alluded to the fact that the conditions are to his liking.

Even the one thing that would normally be a concern for Draper – the longer matches and his penchant for breaking down physically in the past – aren’t as big of a concern, as he hasn’t spent all that much time on court to reach this stage.

With Machac’s talent and ball striking ability I think Draper is a deserved favourite, but I’m not sure I see value in playing 4.5 games.

Jack Draper Recent Form

Since a disappointing campaign at Wimbledon and then in Montreal (a place he had success in the past), Draper has turned things around. He did it just in time for one of the biggest tournaments of the year as well.

After solid wins against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger Aliassime in Cincinnati, where he made it to the final eight, Draper bowed out to the mercurial Holger Rune.

Now he’s into the second week of the U.S. Open and he’s got a great chance to really do some damage in New York.

Machac is a tough opponent, but if Draper can break down his backhand and use his superior rally tolerance to win the unforced error count, he has a great chance to progress. With a potential matchup against Alex de Minaur in the next round, I think he could fancy his chances at reaching the final four.

Tomas Machac Recent Form

It’s tough to take anything away from Machac and the way he’s played this week. The one caveat would be that his competition consisted of two guys that are a bit older (Fabio Fognini and David Goffin) and Sebastian Korda – who needed a few medical timeouts in that match.

Some may give him more credit for beating an in-form Goffin than I do, simply because I don’t believe Goffin’s on court level matches his win-loss record on paper. Nevertheless, the Czech has yet to drop a set and has won some in dominant fashion along the way.

This kind of form, along with the aforementioned ball striking ability is why I am not keen to bet against him on the handicap.

He should be the underdog, but he’s certainly a dangerous one!

Jack Draper vs Tomas Machac H2H – Stat of the Match

Machac has actually beaten Draper every time they’ve played. Considering how much the market loves that stat, it’s odd to see Draper taking so much money. I’m not one to take matches from more than a year or two ago into consideration, nor matches on a different surface, so I’m not going to place a bet on Machac solely on the 3-0 head-to-head either.
