Destanee Aiava and Eva Lys are one win away from claiming a spot in the main draw for the 2025 Australian Open.

Eva Lys was in this same position a year ago but fell short in the final qualifying match after getting knocked out of the first round of the 2023 version of the dance.

I am not convinced that the line setters have the lines right for this match because Destanee Aiava shouldn’t be getting such a lovely price. At +140, I am all over Aiava to pull off this upset and she’s building confidence with every win.

The 24-year-old Melbourne native started playing in this event in 2016 and has yet to get past the first round. Aiava hasn’t seen the main draw in three years after failing to qualify for the past two seasons but the time is now!

The Australian native played in four main draws at the Najor Tournament and has yet to get past the first round in her career.

Eva Lys hasn’t looked impressive in two qualifying matches. Despite the straight-set victories, Hanne Vandewinkle pushed Lys to 4 and 3 and Anna Rodionova pushed Lys to a 7 – 5, 6 – 4 result. 

That opens the door for the upset call on Aiava in her native Australia to reach her fifth main draw entry and first in four years. The +140 offer floats my boat and I expect this underdog to take a bite out of Lys and advance to the main draw of the 2025 Australian Open!

DESTANEE AIAVA RECENT FORM

Destanee Aiava is 7 – 0 over the last seven outings and hoisted the Brisbane WTA50 title to end the 2024 campaign. Aiava has produced impressive wins over Ana Bogdan and Panna Udvardy to open qualifying which will lead to a win over Lys to reach the main draw.

Aiava started the week ranked 195th and a main draw appearance will surely slide that number up a bit.

EVA LYS RECENT FORM

Eva Lys is ranked 129th on the WTA tour and the German native hasn’t been seen above 127th since 2022. The 22-year-old has spent the last three .ranked around the 130th mark and she hasn’t won a tournament in three years either.

Lys produced a 30 – 17 record in 2024 and has three straight campaigns with a winning record.
