Sorribes Tormo lacks a big win this year, and the Spaniard isn’t even favored against 284th-ranked Claire Liu, which could spell trouble.

When Claire Liu landed in qualifying having to face top-seeded Carolina Dolehide, the +150 underdog lost the first set and then found the confidence to advance to the final spot in the first qualifier with the main draw entry in the balance.

Dolehide was favored at -175, and after she won the first set, the odds jumped significantly toward the American to advance. Another American had other ideas in mind, and out of nowhere, Claire Liu found the motivation to mount a comeback and upset Dolehide.

Had Dolehide won, she would have odds of -250 to beat Sorribes Tormo, but instead, Liu is slightly favored and I agree that she should be.

Sara Sorribes Tormo and Claire Liu on March 4th at Indian Wells, and Liu dismantled the Spaniard in straight sets. Sorribes Tormo was listed at -220 to defeat Liu, and now she is the underdog just a few weeks later?

That tells me all I need to know, and I will take the -1.5 games with the American to cover because the line has a better return. I am not paying -135 for Liu, but I will pay the marginal -105 for the American to win by 2 games. 

Sorribes Tormo has no quality wins this year at all, and Liu brings big momentum into this match after taking out Dolehide. Combined, it points me to a Liu win whether she needs three sets or not to get there.

Claire Liu has reached 59th in the WTA Rankings in her career, but after missing the entire back-half of 2024, the American fell to 284th.

Liu is 8 – 4 in 2025 and only played in 27 matches last year, although she did win a WTA75 event at Saint-Gaudens (ITF).

SARA SORRIBES TORMO RECENT FORM

Sara Sorribes Tormo dropped the first set against 749th-ranked Lilli Tagger in the first qualifying match, and needed three sets to earn her way here.

The Spaniard is 9 – 5 this season, following up a 23 – 28 2024 campaign, and has no wins against a player ranked better than 100th.

Liu and Sorribest Tormo met two weeks ago today at Indian Wells, and the American upset the Spaniard as a +175 underdog.

Sorribes Tormo had won the first two meetings with Liu at the 2020 US Open and in Toronto during the 2022 campaign.
