The first preview of Tuesday’s action is from the BCR Sibiu Open on the ATP Challenger Tour. It’s a newcomer and a returning player that hasn’t played much in quite some time. Let’s look at Nicolai Budkov Kjaer vs Artem Dubrivnyy.

Dubrivnyy’s win probability is only 35%, while Budkov Kjaer is favored to win at 1.44 odds. The handicap is 3.5 games and the total games line is 21.5.

Jon Reid’s Budkov Kjaer vs Dubrivnyy prediction is for Budkov Kjaer to cover the handicaps.

Put simply, give me one of the most talented juniors in the world taking on a guy who hasn’t really played for a few years on the professional circuit. Dubrivnyy did manage to come through qualifying, but this does seem like a step up, even if Budkov Kjaer is new to pro tennis himself.

We’ve seen a strong start to the teenager’s professional career on clay, having won a pair of titles on the ITF Tour, with a few decent wins at the back end of each week.

Though he went out early in the junior draw of the French Open, he found consistent success in junior draws at the other three Majors as well.

Budkov Kjaer is ready for the Challenger level, especially if it’s only a Challenger 50 in Romania.

Read on for more expert insights.

Nicolai Budkov Kjaer Recent Form

Welcome to Challenger Tour tennis Nicolai! After some really impressive results at the junior grand slams this season and a pair of titles down on the ITF Tour, it’s time for a Challenger Tour debut for the 18-year-old from Norway.

Having gone deep at both the Australian and U.S. Open in the junior draw, while winning junior Wimbledon, Budkov Kjaer has proven his game can play across surfaces. Oddly enough, on the clay, he actually went out in the first round at Roland Garros, but it’s not like he’s weak on the dirt. Each of his ITF titles in recent months came on this surface and in the Davis Cup last year, he went to Peru against some Challenger and main tour opposition and played both Juan Pablo Varillas and Ignacio Buse fairly close in a hostile environment.

Squaring off with someone newly back to the tour, I’m going to give the young gun the benefit of the doubt that a two-break-of-serve margin isn’t quite enough and that this handicap should be closer to -4.5 or -5 games.

He’s had plenty of lopsided victories on the ITF circuit, and though this is a tougher level of tournament, the opponent is probably similar to those he saw down on the ITF Tour. For instance, the current version of Dubrivnyy is not likely that much better than players like Michael Agwi or Yanki Milev – two guys that Budkov Kjaer had excellent showings against en route to his second ITF title.

Artem Dubrivnyy Recent Form

Tough to look at his recent form. Dubrivnyy has played just three professional matches since March of 2022. Two of those (wins in qualifying) came this past weekend as he made his way into the main draw in Sibiu.

Have to credit him for beating Robert Strombachs in the first qualifying round, but I don’t think a pair of middling wins (at best) would earn him the respect of being a 3.5-4 game underdog in this contest.

Not sure what he does that should keep things close against Budkov Kjaer. At altitude, perhaps the serve is going to play more effectively, but it’s not enough to move the needle by a full game for me.

Nicolai Budkov Kjaer vs Artem Dubrivnyy H2H – Stat of the Match

Not surprising that these two haven’t met. Budkov Kjaer has only played professional matches this season (plus that Davis Cup action late last season), while Dubrivnyy has just returned to the sport for the first time in over two years.
