I know the youngster is more known for clay and has built his ranking on clay courts. Now, that ranking is only No. 575, but let’s keep in mind he’s still 16 years old and that he’s the top-ranked U17 in the world and is third among players under 18 years of age.
Dedura-Palomero is a talent. He’s also started his year playing some ITF Tour tournaments on hard courts and is 2-2 as he enters this contest with another player that is essentially an ITF level guy.
Broska is a journeyman who has never been inside the world’s top-550 and who has one or two notable wins in the last several years.
Even if the teen is fairly new to hard court tennis, there is no way I’m passing up the chance to back him as a decent-sized underdog here against someone who he should be beating, even at 16 years old, if he wants to continue his development on the professional tours.
It should also be a fairly manageable tournament for him, considering Koblenz has played slower than most indoor hard court tournaments in the last few seasons, meaning he isn’t as likely to be rushed as often as he would on quicker surfaces playing against more physically developed men.
Florian Broska Recent Form
It’s really tough to get a gauge on Broska’s game, considering there’s so little tape and so few statistics from his matches available. Why? He’s played the vast majority of his matches at a level where service and return stats aren’t often kept and there are no on-demand replays of matches.
That means his lesser-known game is probably lesser-known for a reason. In the last 52 weeks, Broska has played 21 hard court matches, with only six having statistics to analyse. Even those came at M15 ITF events – the lowest level tournament on the professional ladder.
Lack of experience or not on the other side of the net, I can’t have him as the clear favourite here. One half-decent win (from a set down) against Patrick Zahraj doesn’t change that, and seeing as him moving past Kimmer Coppejans was a walkover, he doesn’t get that much credit for coming through the qualifying draw.
Diego Dedura-Palomero Recent Form
After a year that saw him win over 30 professional matches on the dirt and enter the top-600 fairly early in his development, the German youngster has elected to start the season with a block of hard court tournaments to gain some experience on the quicker courts (though this week, he should feel a bit more comfortable).
There is obviously a long way to go and I’m not making the case that he should be a 1.50 favourite just yet, even against a journeyman opponent, but I will say I think that being nearly 2.50 is a bit of a stretch.
The consistency is already ready for the Challenger level and the shotmaking he can come up with at such a young age is impressive. Obviously the power game needs some work, but I can’t think of too many players that didn’t need some improvements in that department at his age.
Florian Broska vs Diego Dedura-Palomero H2H – Stat of the Match
Despite the fact that Dedura-Palomero still isn’t even a 17-year-old, these two have actually played a professional match. It took place on the youngster’s preferred clay surface, but that was in 2023, which to me, is an impressive win, whether you’re on your preferred surface or not.
