With Angie Kalinina dropping out of the National Bank Open, Bernarda Pera will now face Katie Boulter in the first round in Toronto on Wednesday. EJ Garr’s Bernarda Pera vs Katie Boulter prediction features odds at -105 which can be found below.

Bernarda Pera has already played a pair of 3-set affairs in qualifying, and the American dropped the first set twice while mounting comebacks to reach the main draw.

Katie Boulter was just seen in Paris at the Olympics last week as the only Brit in the event but it was a quick stay after Anna Shmiedlova sent her packing for Canada.

Bernarda Pera vs Katie Boulter WTA Toronto Prediction: Brit Chasing a Rebound

  • Prediction: Bernarda Pera +3.5 Games Handicap
  • Best Odds: -105
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at 7:00 am UK Time on August 7, 2024.

Angie Kalinina dropped out of the Olympics due to a sore throat and illness due to the rain in Paris, and the Ukrainian national stayed behind to support her compatriots. Bernarda Pera was named Kalinina’s replacement yesterday and the American will be playing as an underdog at +200.

Boulter was a big letdown in Paris as a favorite to win her first match against Anna Schmiedlova but when the Brit is on clay you can bet it will be a struggle. We all know that Katie loves to play on the grass and it is where she feels most comfortable but her record on hardcourts is formidable.

Boulter earned nearly a million bucks for her win at San Diego earlier this season, and it was the first win for the Brit on hardcourts at the WTA level. Katie has four hardcourt titles but the first three were won at the ITF level.

Bernarda Pera has never won a title on anything but clay but the American has already had to play six sets in two matches at Toronto. Pera got past Miriam Bulgaru and Nao Hibino in qualifying but dropped the first set each time adding to the pressure on the American.

The reason I am taking Pera and the +3.5 handicap comes down to the lines. Boulter is listed with +100 odds to win this match in straight sets but the +3.5 on Pera is -105. I would rather put a few games in my pocket than count on Boulter to roll over Pera in Toronto.

BERNARDA PERA RECENT FORM

Bernarda Pera is ranked 80th on tour and has a 14 – 10 record on hardcourts this campaign. Pera is 5 – 2 in her last 7 outings and all five wins required 3 sets to find victory.

For the first time in her career, Pera is on pace to have a winning record on all three surfaces although her rank has dropped 15 points since last season.

KATIE BOULTER RECENT FORM

Boulter is trying to shake off a 2-match losing skid after a loss to Harriet Dart at Wimbledon and the first-round exit at the Olympics.

Katie is now 2 – 5 on clay this season but that doesn’t surprise anyone. Ranked 33rd on tour, Boulter is 13 – 5 on hardcourts this season and is 7 – 2 in her last 9 matches on the surface including the run to the San Diego title in March.

PERA VS BOULTER H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Pera and Boulter have met twice but it’s been a few years since their last encounter.

In 2019, Boulter earned a 3-set win over Pera at St. Petersburg, and in 2020 Pera returned the favor with a straight-sets win at Adelaide to level the series at 1 – 1..
