Ekaterina Alexandrova reeled off three straight wins in the Netherlands to open the grass campaign but fell short of defending her two titles at Hertogenbosch. After a loss in the semis against Samsonova, Alexandrova is listed as the favorite to land in the second round where Coco Gauff awaits the winner of this clash.

While Alexandrova struggled to get anything right on clay this season (1- 6), Haddad Maia also put up a disappointing campaign on her favorite surface. Getting ousted at the French Open without a win surely left Beatriz emotionally scarred and she hasn’t played tennis since.

This is Haddad Maia’s first match since May 27th, and three weeks is a long time to be off the court while changing surfaces to boot. Beatriz has never lost to Ekaterina, and that has to provide some confidence for someone in dire need of it.
