I’m going to go with a match that won’t be played Monday for this preview, because I do think it presents one of the best underdog backing opportunities of the opening round and with Bucharest an hour ahead time zone wise than most of Europe, if it’s first on court on Tuesday, there won’t be time to preview it and post it before the match starts.
We’ll start with Yunchaokete, who has shown the ability to be an all-court player, with firepower that can hit through even slow courts and an improving game in terms of solidity. His backhand has also been holding up well this season and late in 2024, which is key against the Spaniard known for his backhand prowess.
From the Bautista Agut perspective, the fact is, he’s been really poor this season and his ability to control and dictate play has all but evaporated. Without quicker conditions to make his game look a little bigger, he really struggles to win points that his opponents don’t give him via unforced errors.
I can’t have him a clear favourite against an up-and-coming player who should have the match on his racquet.
Roberto Bautista Agut Recent Form
Just 1-7 this year, Bautista Agut is clearly well past his prime and likely just about done competing at the highest level. You’ll never find me questioning the 36-year-old’s competitive drive. His warrior spirit is second to none, but his talent and ability has been regressing in a major way.
He’s kept a lot of his losses close, but the fact remains, he’s played some mediocre-at-best opposition for most of the year and still been losing.
I’m not sure what he’s done to earn this valuation other than being experienced and having been a good player in the past. Unfortunately, I don’t think either of things makes up for the dip in level we’ve seen from him in recent times. Father Time remains is, after all, undefeated.
Bu Yunchaokete Recent Form
Look, Yunchaokete’s form doesn’t look great on paper, but my goodness, has he ever had it tough in terms of his draws. He cruised against a manageable opponent in his first match in Delray before losing to top-5 Taylor Fritz. In Rio de Janeiro, he drew top-3 Alexander Zverev in his first match and kept that one really close, losing by just a one break of serve margin. In Acapulco it was a good young American in Alex Michelsen who took him down in the opening round in an odd match that saw Yunchaokete win 18 games to Michelsen’s 16.
Then came the Sunshine Double, where Yunchaoke once more looked like the much better player when he played lower ranked opponents and had to contend with Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur (top-10 and 11th in the world, respectively).
In other words, Yunchaokete has been just fine in my books and against players that are in the same sphere as his opponent in the first round here, he’s been excellent. I’ll take the nice underdog odds for a player that I think is just as likely to win this match as he is to lose it.
