The most famous tournament in tennis is here! Though the main draw is still a week away, we have the qualifying draw commencing with the men’s first round on Monday.

To start us off, I’m going to back an underdog at nice high odds who has a nice serve and is at his best on quicker courts. Though he’s put more work into clay tennis this season, Matusevich has typically loaded his schedule up with indoor hard court tournaments.

Though he can be erratic at times, we know that the quicker courts keep points shorter and really help minimise the unforced error counts.

Barrios Vera has been quietly decent on grass for someone who has played primarily on clay in his career, so I don’t mind him being the favourite here, but I can’t get to him winning this as often as these odds imply.

We have more previews over on our expert insights page.

Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera Recent Form

It’s been a tough season for the Chilean, with his best results being a pair of quarterfinal appearances in clay court Challengers from 13 events he’s entered across the main tour and Challenger level.

His first serve and ability to generate pace on the forehand have allowed him to look decent on grass in the past, especially relative to many others from South America, where many are more clay court specialist types.

Luckily for him he’s up against a player who hasn’t really taken the step forward that many British tennis fans may have hoped. Still, it’s hard to make an out of form player this large of a favourite against someone that has a pretty decent first serve playing on a faster court.

Anton Matusevich Recent Form

Ranked outside the top-400, the 23-year-old has been playing a lot of his tennis down on the ITF circuit.

He’s actually played quite a bit of clay court tennis this season and has made a few runs in those weaker field tournaments.

His game is still pretty raw and he could use a more consistent first serve percentage, along with some more consistency from the baseline, but he does have weapons and when he finds the range, he’s more than capable of pulling off this type of upset.
