Tuesday was Women’s Day on the Tennis2 Channel, and the second match was Ashlyn Lrueger vs Donna Vekic in Cincinnati. I gained respect for Ashlyn although both players were dealing with the heat and humidity.

Donna Vekic looked like she was going to pass out in the second set, and after calling a timeout it took Medical about 5 minutes to even get to her on the court. Flushed and overheated, Vekic plowed on and won the second set to force the match to go the distance and then I gained respect for Vekic for staying out there. Ashlyn went on to take the third set, 6 – 2, and the reward was a second-round appearance and a day off on Wednesday to recover from a lengthy battle. 

Diana Shnaider didn’t struggle with Shuai Zhang as expected in the first round, although the 6 – 4 second set was a bit surprising, Zhang is 0 – 6 this season and ranked 689th but almost forced a third set had she found one break in the match that never came. Shnaider broke Zhang 4 times including three breaks in a convincing first-set win, 6 – 1.

One thing Ashlyn Krueger has going for her is her length and ability to track down shots on the baseline. The American kept herself in points against Vekic surprising a small gathering of fans in Cincinnati, and all I can see is another 3-set affair for this match.

Ash is ranked 65th on the WTA Tour, and the more I watch the 20-year-old Texas native the more I respect her game. Watching the match with Vekic was an impressive win, even if Vekic struggled with the heat and humidity both had to endure the same conditions.

Krueger is 14 – 11 on hardcourts this season with a 24 – 20 record this campaign and she is carrying another 3-match win streak into this second-round clash. Ashlyn went 4 – 0 in Toronto before losing to eventual champ Jess Pegula.

The American has also won both outings against Shnaider which I will get into below.

DIANA SHNAIDER RECENT FORM

Shnaider is also 20 years old and ranks 20th on the WTA tour coming to rise quite quickly. 

With four tourney wins earned this campaign, Diana is one of a few players who have claimed a title on all three surfaces. 

At 42 – 16 for the season and an 18 – 8 record on hardcourts, Shnaider wouldn’t be the youngest player to win the Cincinnati Open since Coco pulled that feat off last season at 19 but she’ll give it a run!

Ashlyn and Diana first met at Wimbledon in 2021, and the two teenagers met in the first round of the GIrls’ Tournament. Krueger won the match, 7 – 5, 7 – 5, and the two met again last season at a WTA60 event in Charlottesville.

Krueger earned a 3-set win in the second meeting and has a 2 – 0 record against Shnaider.
