Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka will be a heavy favorite on Thursday when she faces 35th-ranked Yulia Putnitseva in the third round of the Wuhan Open.
At odds reaching close to -800 to advance to the quarterfinals of this WTA1000 event in China, Sabalenka has never lost a match at Wuhan in three appearances at the tournament.
To snap Sabalenka’s 13-match win streak at this event, the Kazakhstan native will need a monumental effort as a massive underdog.

I spent my Tuesday night watching college football and the WTA on T2 so I took in the Putintseva win over Vekic before they featured the Sabalenka affair with Siniakova.
Women’s Night is great because it’s all about the WTA and they showed the match between Putintseva and Vekic which was a fantastic affair.
Vekic would have broken six racquets and some windows if they were close by and her frustration was more than obvious in her game. Being mad at your racquet isn’t a good look and Putintseva managed to keep Vekic at bay enough to take a 3-set win into the third round of the Wuhan Open.
I also learned that the balls in Wuhan are not flying through the air with velocity when Asia Muhammad spoke of it during the telecast. Players are loosening the tension in their racquets to adjust for the softness of the balls seemingly floating in the air in Wuhan.
Sabalenka was broken twice against Siniakova and pushed to 6 – 4, 6 – 4 in the second round which should give Putintseva some confidence. At +6 on the handicap, it might be a similar scoreline and a 6 – 3, 6 – 3 final pushes the action at least.
Putintseva can hang around with Sabalenka and it was good to see her pass the test against Vekic in a tough match against a sound opponent. I’ll respect the Kazakh’s game enough to challenge Sabalenkas’ 13-match win streak in Wuhan.
ARYNA SABALENKA RECENT FORM
In 2018 and 2019, Sabalenka won her only two appearances in Wuhan and after the second-round win over Siniakova, she is 13 – 0 at this event.
Sabalenka has enjoyed the North American and Asian swings on the WTA Tour. With a 20 – 3 record since the end of the grass campaign, Sabalenka has two Major titles and a win at Cincinnati to build on in Wuhan.
Sabalenka is 34 – 7 on hard courts this year and the win over Siniakova banked win number 50 for the 2024 campaign against 12 losses.
YULIA PUTINTSEVA RECENT FORM
Yulia Putintseva shut down the courageous Shuai Zhang in the first round of the Wuhan Open and the win over 15-seed Donna Vekic was a confidence booster for the 29-year-old Kazakhstan native.
Putintseva is producing her best campaign as a pro with winning records on all three surfaces in 2024 including a Birmingham title on grass.
Yulia is 20 – 13 on hard courts this season and has a career-high 37 wins in 2024 against 20 losses.
SABALENKA VS PUTINTSEVA H2H – STAT OF THE MATCH
In 2019, Yulia Putnitseva defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 32 at the US Open. That is the only meeting between them.
