Ayano Shimizu is riding a 5 – 0 win streak after hoisting the Kashiwa WTA15 hardware this past weekend, and only dropped a single set en route to her first title of the campaign.

Arianne Hartono is reeling from two straight losses in Serbia, but the Netherlands native is favored to advance at -165.

Arianne Hartono left Serbia with two disappointing losses, and with nearly two weeks off, the Netherlands native needs to get back in form. The 176th-ranked former Ole Miss star has struggled to put a good run together this season from eight tournament entries.

Outside of the four wins at Targa Mures in Romania, Hartono has been ousted in the first match of five tournaments, but the line setters like her chances today.

I am not a fan of the -167 odds on the Dutch to progress, but I can handle the -2.5 with a reasonable -115 at Pinnacle. I cannot find another book offering lines for this match, which might be the case for this event. I certainly have none here in New York for these low-level events, which I am not happy about.

As impressive as the 5 – 0 was for Shimizu last week, the list of names she defeated leaves plenty to be desired. There wasn’t a win against a player ranked above 523rd to pick up the tournament win in Kishiwa, and Hartono is ranked well above any of that.

Not that I put a ton of stock in rankings, but they are hard to ignore sometimes.

Hartono should be able to navigate her way to a first-round win as a 1-seed in this event, and cover the marginal -2.5 games. With -115 attached to the action, it saves us a bunch on the inflated Moneyline offer on a Hartono victory. 

ARIANNE HARTONO RECENT FORM

Arianne Hartono has a  9 – 16 record since last September, and the 28-year-old Dutch native hasn’t been playing her best tennis to start 2025.

Hartono is 7 – 9 this season, and has only made one nice run from the eight tournament entries mentioned above. Another first-round exit will push Hartono closer to 200 in the WTA Rankings, so this is a must-win situation.

AYANO SHIMIZU RECENT FORM

Ayano Shimizu is 9 – 3 in 2025, and has been good enough to bring her ranking to 303rd on the WTA Tour. Shimizu could crack the top 300 with a decent run in Osaka, and she has won all three ITF tournaments in her native Japan.

Shimizu went 27 – 24 on hard courts last season, extending her run with a positive record on that surface since 2020.
