I have given away my prediction for this match already and I am sure you see that I expect a 3-set affair when Rus and McCartney meet on Thursday in Cleveland. 

McCartney was listed with odds at +180 against her second-round opponent Xinyu Wang. After dropping the first set to the 37th-ranked Chinese native, Kessler completed the comeback and here is the 25-year-old American in the quarters. 

Kessler landed the wildcard entry for the Tennis in the Land event in Cleveland which is a WTA250 tournament, and she will be a Wildcard entrant for the US Open which is in the qualifying process this week..

Arantxa Rus did exactly what I thought she would do yesterday providing the upset over Tomova at +120. I was even more impressed that the Dutch native didn’t drop a set to the 7-seed in Cleveland but we’ll take the money.

I am not convinced that Rus will sweep Kessler off the court today because McCartney is having a breakout 2024 campaign. After starting the campaign ranked 221st in the world, Kessler broke into the top 100 after winning the Landisville title on August 11. 

What we’ll see is each woman taking a set to force a tie-breaking final frame, and yes I said that! When they go to 6 – 6 in the third be sure to comment below and tell me what you thought of that call!

Rus is 6 – 1 in her last 7 matches including the run to the Hamburg final last week, albeit a loss to Anna Bondar in the title game.

Arantxa has only claimed one title at The Hague in her native Netherlands this year, although she did defend last season’s win in the event.

Rus is 9 – 9 on hardcourts in 2024 and she hopes to avoid a 10th season with a losing record on the surface. The 33-year-old is 27 – 25 this campaign thanks to a 16 – 11 record on clay.

McCartney Kessler is getting noticed this season and in what is essentially her second full season on tour the American is in the top 100 of the rankings. At 25, she got a late start turning pro but it is paying off.

Kessler has three ITF.Challenger titles this year and the 26 – 8 record on hardcourts isn’t bad at all. Despite the 2 – 6 record on the clay this campaign, Kessler is 32 – 17 and is also 6 – 1 in her last 7 outings.
