At odds rising to -150, Cristian is expected to get past her Hungarian counterpart despite facing a 4-game losing skid entering this WTA1000 event in Beijing.

Anna Bondar got herself into the top 100 of the rankings because of a stellar clay swing but the Hungarian native has struggled to find consistency on hard courts this campaign.

I am not so convinced that we’ll see that happen and as you have already seen I am calling for the upset special of the week in Beijing today!

If this match were being played on clay, Bondar would be the one favored to win against Cristian but Anna doesn’t play her best tennis on hard courts which is concerning.

Coming into China, Bondar has a level record on this surface following two losing campaigns on hard courts and a poor finish to the Asian swing could bounce the Hungarian out of the top 100 of the WTA Rankings.

Currently holding the 90th position, Bondar only played in two events during the North American swing, and two outings resulted in losses. After the loss to 119th-ranked Rebecca Masarova at Hua Hin, the Asian swing hasn’t gotten off to a good start for Bondar but that should turn around today.

A win for Bondar would build a semblance of confidence for the upcoming match against Barbora in the next round.

Cristian went 0 – 2 in North America competing with appearances in Cleveland and the US Open and was then bounced out of Tunisia leaving Africa with a 4-match losing slide. 

Cristian doesn’t have the confidence to carry a -150 favorite role so Bondar gets the nod to provide the upset special in China.

Anna Bondar is 12 – 12 on hard courts this year and that follows up a 5 – 11 campaign in 2023 on this surface. Anyone who follows women’s tennis acknowledges that if Bondar is on grass she has no chance to win the match (She is 0 – 6 career).

Regarding hardcourt play, Bondar can be just as spotty and the 2021 season is the only campaign with a winning record on this surface.

Jacqueline Cristian is ranked 80th in the WTA Tour and is looking for one piece of confidence in her game. Cristian upset Caroline Garcia at the Olympics and it’s the last time she’s won a match. 

After the loss to Angie Kerber in Paris to close her Olympic agenda, Cristian has lost to Greet Minnen in Cleveland, Daria Kasatkina at the US Open, and most recently got taken out of Monastir in the first round against Rebecca Masarova.

Cristian is 6 – 13 on hard courts this year and the 16- 10 record on clay will be the only positive surface in 2024. At 24 – 26, Cristian needs a strong Asian swing to avoid a second losing season in three years.
