To gain entry into the main draw at the BNP Paribas Open, Anastasia Zakharova will face Maya Joint out of the Ninth Qualifier bracket on Monday at Indian Wells.

Qualifying began on Sunday for the first WTA1000 event of the 2025 campaign, and the next two weeks will be filled with quality tennis in California.

Zakharova has struggled to build consistent efforts to begin the campaign, and Joint is finding some confidence after a run to the quarterfinals in Austin.

EJ Garr’s prediction for Anastasia Zakharova vs. Maya Joint has odds at -115.

Anastasia Zakharova vs Maya Joint WTA Indian Wells Prediction: Australian Favored to Progress at BNP Paribas Open

  • Prediction: Maya Joint -2.5 Games
  • Best Odds: -115
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as of 7:00 am UK Time On Match 3, 2025. Odds may now differ.

Winning at the ITF level hasn’t been a challenge for Anastasia Zakharova. This WTA1000 event is a big step up in competition and the 23-year-old is already an underdog to begin qualifying for the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open.

Maya Joint has odds of -175 to defeat Zakharova, and the Australian native is coming off a nice run at the Merida Open. Joint reached the quarterfinals after four wins in Mexico, but fell short against Elina Avenesyan. Luckily, we’ve got a nice +138 from the Joint vs. Avanesyan match on Friday because they went the distance.

Maya Joint’s loss in Mexico after winning four outings shouldn’t deter her from coming out of the gate strong at Indian Wells. I expect a convincing win for the Aussie, and the -2.5 games has some marginal juice at -115, but that is not a bad price to expect Joint to win this match and cover three games.

Maya Joint will wake up in the morning inside the top 100 WTA Rankings for the first time since turning pro. She was 103rd on Friday last week, but the quarterfinal appearance in Mexico will be enough.

The issue with Zakharova is the quality wins vs. the losses. A win over Sawangkaew is the highest-ranked victory for Zakharova, and losses to Anna Bondar and two against Moyuka Uchijima, leave me unimpressed.

Expect Joint to ease past Zakharova and cover the -2.5 games, and I will be surprised if Joint drops a set to her opponent. The +140 odds on Joint to sweep Zakharova look tempting so you might fancy that option for better value.

ANASTASIA ZAKHAROVA RECENT FORM

Anastasia Zakharova will likely remain ranked 132nd on the WTA Tour when the rankings come out on Monday. Zakharova is 7 – 7 this season and hasn’t won more than two matches from the first seven events of 2025.

The 23-year-old went 38 – 22 in 2024, completing a fourth straight campaign with a winning record.

MAYA JOINT RECENT FORM

Maya Joint will turn 19 in April and is 14 – 6 to open the 2025 campaign. Joint produced a 62 – 28 record in her first season on the WTA Tour and won two ITF tournaments in 2024.

The Australian native has a 53 – 24 record on hard courts over the last two seasons.

ZAKHAROVA VS JOINT HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Today’s meeting at Indian Wells marks the first time Zakharova and Joint will face each other on the WTA Tour.

The winner of this match will face Olivia Gadecki or Mirjam Bjorklund for the right to compete in the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
