Seeing Potapova favored at -175 is no surprise, but Kim Birrell might think otherwise. In January at Brisbane, Potapova’s serve was a complete disaster, and it ultimately cost her the win. The first set went to a tie-break, and Birrell broke Potapova four times and then broke her twice in the second set to sweep her off the court in the first event of the 2025 campaign.

That first-set result has me eyeing that prop on the total, and I expect no less than a 6 – 4 opening frame to get us paid early. The Over 10.5 games at +300 odds are making me drool on myself, so let me clean up a little before we continue, HA!

Potapova knows she needs to clean up her service game to be taken seriously on the WTA Tour, and her return game is usually dependable enough. We’ve cashed many a ticket around here riding Potapova’s return of serve when she is in good form, but her confidence could use a boost.

After the five wins en route to the title in Romania, Potapova went 6 – 0 after the win against Haddad Maia in Dubai, and then the wheels fell off. 

Losing to Dayana Yastremska in straight sets to end the streak was a bad loss. The two are only separated by a few rankings, but Potapova was a -200 favorite to win that outing and flopped in straight sets to the Ukranian.

I expect an early battle to ensue, and after they hit 10 games in the opening frame, we cash the +110 ticket. I will sprinkle a small action bet on the Over 10.5 games because of that lovely +300 sitting there.

ANASTASIA POTAPOVA RECENT FORM

Anastasia Potapova is 12 – 5 in 2025 with the Transylvania title to her credit this season.

Potapova is 1 – 2 over the last three outings, and the lone win was a three-set affair against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro at Indian Wells.

The 23-year-old went 26 – 22 last season and produced a 17 -14 record on hard courts.

KIMBERLY BIRRELL RECENT FORM

Kim Birrell defeated Potapova in the first Brisbane tournament and then went 5 – 0 at Brisbane 2 to win the title at the reduced WTA75 level.

Birrell is 19 – 5 this year and has jumped from 113th to 68th in the WTA Rankings.

The 26-year-old Gold Coast resident turns 27 next month, and that is a player’s prime age. Birrell is proving that to be true, and she can surely surprise Potapova today with an upset… Again!
