Ana Bogdan is no stranger to the underdog role and the Romanian will be in that position again today against favored Marie Bouzkova. The lines have been moving but the juice toward a Bouzkova win has jumped since the odds came out. 

When the match was first set, Bouzkova was listed at -140 and has risen to as high as -175 at Bet365. Oddly, William Hill is still showing -149 on a Bouzkova win so that is quite a discrepancy between the bookmakers.

Bouzkova has struggled to stay consistent since the run to the Washington final, and that loss to Paula Badosa seemingly took the wind out of the Czech Republic native’s sail.

Bouzkova is 4 – 6 over the last 10 outings but one of those registered losses was due to an early exit against Caroline Garcia in Guadalajara. Still clinging to the 43rd in the WTA Rankings, Bouzkova struggled with 59th-ranked Uchijima in the opening round needing three sets to advance to the second round.

Bouzkova recently lost to Veronika Kudermetova in Wuhan, and Bogdan’s third win in Osaka came against Kudermetova yesterday at the Japan Women’s Open. 

I will take the first set Over 9.5 Games expecting the Romanian to challenge Bouzkova early with the confidence of having beaten her twice in two former meetings. Even though it has been five years since their last clash, Bogdan will rely on that experience and I call for a 6 – 4 opening frame to cash the ticket.

Ana Bogdan is 4 – 1 over her last five outings and is ranked 111th on the WTA Tour.

With a 14 – 11 record on hard courts, it is the only surface Bogdan has produced a positive record (4 – 8 Clay, 0 – 2 Grass).

Bogdan is 19 – 22 this year hoping to avoid a losing campaign for the first time since 2020. The Romanian native only played 13 matches in the pandemic season and was 6 – 7 but has produced three straight campaigns with a positive record entering 2024.
