Stuck in a bit of a rut on our last few men’s previews here, so I’m going to keep it simple. While Altmaier may not be the most proficient on hard courts, he’s got the bigger serve, bigger weapons and has at least won a match on the main circuit on the surface.
The same can’t be said for Navone, who is about as much of a clay specialist as you’ll find in the sport these days. His game is all about precision, topspin and consistency. Topspin isn’t as useful and while precision and consistency play on any surface, his underpowered serve is at a huge disadvantage when he gets to the hard courts.
I’ll take Altmaier to snag a win he could really use.
Daniel Altmaier Recent Form
Though he has a losing record so far this season in hard court play, he does have a handful of wins to his name. Those wins haven’t exactly come against Challenger scrubs either, with the German taking down Felix Auger Aliassime and Alexander Zverev earlier in the year.
What’s more important is that the losses have mainly come against top-50 talents as well in Grigor Dimitrov, Arthur Fils, Miomir Kecmanovic, Karen Khachanov, Jan Lennard Struff. This summer’s losses to Corentin Moutet and Rinky Hijikata are a bit more concerning, but they’re both inside the top-75 and Hijikata is on his preferred surface.
I probably won’t be backing Altmaier as we get deeper into the week, but with the stronger serve, more hard court wins to his name and the opposition he’s playing, I’m happy to back him just this once.
Mariano Navone Recent Form
Now 0-4 on the season on hard courts, Navone has lost his last eight sets on the surface, winning just one in his first match of the season against Dino Prizmic, before going down in the final two sets without much of a fight.
The style simply doesn’t fit with the hard courts, and I’d be surprised if moving into best-of-five tennis where you have to play well for longer to emerge victorious is going to help with that issue.
The one upside for him is that he can play all day, so if he can keep things close, he would be the less likely player to begin breaking down physically. Draggin Altmaier into the mud and trying to wear him down might be his best strategy in this contest.
Daniel Altmaier vs Mariano Navone H2H – Stat of the Match
This will be the first meeting between the two. A bit funny that it comes in the main draw of a grand slam on a hard court, considering how much these two both play on clay down on the Challenger Tour!
