The second preview from Monday’s action in the men’s draw of the U.S. Open comes in the Alexandre Muller vs Adam Walton match. A contest between two guys that have had most of their success come at the Challenger Tour level, this is a big chance for one of them to advance to the second round of a major.

Walton’s win probability is only 35.7%, while Muller is favoured to win at 1.50 odds. The handicap is 3.5 games and the total games line is 38.5.

Alexandre Muller vs Adam Walton Prediction: Frenchman Too Strong for Underpowered Opponent

  • Prediction: Muller -3 Games & Muller -3.5 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.84 & 1.93
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 2/10 & 2/10

Odds updated at 12:00 am UK Time on August 26th, 2024.

I’ll keep this handicap relatively simple. In a hard court match on the main tour, I struggle to see how Walton sticks around on any sort of consistent basis. What makes this match worse for him, is that he’s playing someone that can match his strengths and surpasses him in the areas he struggles in.

Muller isn’t going to be a force himself on the ATP Tour, but he does have a bit more aggression and pace to his game on his serve and from the baseline. What’s more, he can also match the solid, consistent play from the baseline that the Aussie relies heavily upon.

This handicap would feel more appropriate in a regular tour event where it’s best-of three sets. When we have an extra set to cover the handicap and more leeway to drop a set and still cover, I’m happy to jump in here and back the world No. 76.

Alexandre Muller Recent Form

Muller enters the U.S. Open coming off a Challenger title in San Marino earlier this month. That may have been on clay, but the altitude certainly quickened the pace and he still managed to get to North America to get his feet wet on the hard courts before heading to New York City.

It’s a good thing he did too, with a loss early in a Challenger to Tristan Boyer before looking more competitive at the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem, thumping his compatriot Constant Lestienne, before splitting the first two sets and falling in a decider to tour-level regular Pavel Kotov.

I also like that Muller has played over three times as many best-of-five set matches than Walton, with a better win percentage despite having had to endure losses against Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in grand slam main draws.

For me, from experience in this format to the game style, Muller holds the advantage.

Adam Walton Recent Form

The 25-year-old Brisbane native has put in work this season to reach the world’s top-100. We’re not even in September and he’s already played 70 professional matches, with 50 of those coming on hard courts.

With that new ranking has come the chance to play in more tour level tournaments and things haven’t exactly gone smoothly this summer. Walton has one main draw win which came in Atlanta, and that was only possible because of a withdrawal allowing him into the main draw as a lucky loser, as he lost that week in the final round of qualifying.

The increased level of his opposition has been a tough adjustment, with a 2-7 record on the hard courts since Wimbledon.

You have to admire his tenacity, hustle and ability to grind from the baseline, but it’s clear that he still needs much more attack to his game to succeed as he tries to make a go of it on the main tour.

Alexandre Muller vs Adam Walton H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the two, even though they both play a fair amount of tennis on the lower Challenger circuit.
