We’re onto the grass, where the court speeds and the trajectory of the bounces is the polar opposite to what we just saw on clay. For the first preview from ATP events this week I’m looking at Aleksandar Vukic vs Max Purcell from the Libema Open. Our Vukic vs Purcell prediction is available below!

Purcell’s win probability is just above 40%, while Vukic is favored to win at 1.58 odds. The handicap is two games and the total games line is 23.

Vukic vs Purcell Prediction: Out of Form Purcell with Good Chance to Build Confidence

  • Prediction: Purcell to win
  • Best Odds: 2.47
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on June 11th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

What a difference grass courts should make in this matchup compared to if this match had taken place in the last few weeks on clay. As flat hitters with big serves and having grown up on quicker surfaces, both Vukic and Purcell should look much more comfortable on the green stuff in the coming weeks.

Despite both having had surprisingly poor grass seasons in 2023, they’re surely happy to be away from the clay and Purcell in particular could use wins right about now.

I’m sure that a court that rewards his serve, his backhand slice, and his serve & volley abilities will at least make him more competitive in the main tour events in the next few weeks.

Vukic should also find more success on a court where he can serve his way through games with relative ease.

I have this as very close, and as bad as Purcell has been, I think his game is a bit more dynamic and the court speeds that we’ll see over the next month or so will certainly tighten matches up and make underdogs more competitive on a macro scale. Our Vukic vs Purcell prediction is for Purcell to win.

Aleksandar Vukic Recent Form

Mixed bag of results in Week 1 on the grass for Vukic. He did beat Denis Shapovalov at the Challenger event in Surbiton last week (the Canadian was working on a fairly quick turnaround going from slow clay to grass) before losing badly to Lloyd Harris.

Even last season, he somehow managed to play six grass tournaments (demonstrating he clearly likes the surface and knows this is where he should be racking up the points), but only won four matches in all the stops he made combined.

Like Purcell, Vukic has had a terrible season this year as well, losing more matches than he’s won, as he looks to get back on track during the grass season.

Max Purcell Recent Form

While I can’t make the case that Purcell should be a favorite with his track record in 2024, as I just mentioned, Vukic has been in form that matches his. Plus, with his serve, more well-rounded quick court game, and the fact that he’s playing a subpar returner? I also can’t have this price where it is.

You can perhaps make a case that Vukic is the slightest of favorites, but I can’t agree that this is nearly a 60-40 proposition.

It’s not fun backing Purcell when he’s won two tour-level events since February. That said, form is but one factor we look at, and as bad as he’s been it’s not like he’s well behind in that department. The matchup for me points to him being very competitive with his shift to grass.

Aleksandar Vukic vs Max Purcell H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played four times on the professional tours with Vukic leading 3-1. Now, the big caveat to that record is that Purcell retired hurt in two of the three Vukic wins and the third did require a third set.

Unless we’re assuming Purcell is hurt, it’s hard to imagine that record being in any way predictive.
