Alejandro Tabilo vs Roman Safiullin Prediction: Tabilo Well Suited to Send Safiullin Packing

  • Prediction: Tabilo -3 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.98
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 5/10

Odds updated at 4:00 am UK Time on July 26th, 2024.

I’m not sure what Safiullin has going for him in this match that keeps it below a four or even 4.5 game handicap.

He’s not good on clay, he hits too flat of a ball and his form is nothing to write home about.

Tabilo, on the other hand, has made this season the best of his career and has only lost to the likes of Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz and Matteo Berrettini since the French Open. That’s two top-15 players in the world and a third who was once in the top-10.

I like Tabilo’s athleticism against the hitting of Safiullin and I think he’s able to hold his own in that department as well.

With the surface edge, better form of late and a more well-rounded game for the clay, I make this handicap a larger number than three games. Our Tabilo vs Safiullin prediction is for Tabilo to cover the handicap.

Alejandro Tabilo Recent Form

With a few titles at the 250 level and a strong Challenger, Tabilo has really been racking up the victories in 2024.

What’s most impressive is that he’s done it all season, across surfaces and hasn’t really run into a sustained poor patch of form yet.

The talent was always there. He has a nice lefty serve, can hit with spin or flatten out his groundstrokes, has pop from the baseline and is pretty athletic for his size, allowing him to defend decently and track balls down.

There are very few bad losses on his resume this year and he’s surged into the world’s top-25.

I’d be surprised if he doesn’t cover this relatively modest game handicap the majority of the time.

Roman Safiullin Recent Form

It has been a rough year for the Russian, who has fallen from the world’s top-40 all the way down to No. 67. His record is just 10-18 and that includes the 3-1 run to the Brisbane semifinals back in the first week of the season, which surely feels like an eternity ago.

Slower surfaces have been even worse for him, as he won just one match in the Los Cabos, Acapulco and Indian Wells stretch and followed that up with just three wins in seven clay court tournaments.

If this match took place on a quicker hard court, I’d be more inclined to believe Safiullin could keep things close if he could serve well and put points away early. At Roland Garros, I’m not as confident he can stay within reach.
