It’s tough to trust guys that haven’t played in a while, but with nice underdog odds, a matchup advantage I like and the fact that his opponent isn’t close to playing his best tennis either, I think backing Hardt in this spot is just fine.
Hardt hasn’t played since the U.S. Open, but has had a pretty decent 2024 season on clay and he’s certainly been on the upswing from a macro point of view with his game. His serve has improved and more importantly, his ability to grind and play incredibly consistent tennis from the baseline and retrieval balls from the outer thirds of the court and extend rallies should serve him very well against an incredibly erratic player whose issues have come back to haunt him after what seemed like a breakthrough a few months ago.
Andreev has shown us of late that he’s right back to the player that can play some phenomenal points, make some great shots and dictate play one game and then look absolutely horrible and crumble mentally the next.
I’ll keep the staking to a standard size here, but I do think Hardt is mispriced and we’re seeing the undervaluation simply because it’s his first tournament back since August.
Adrian Andreev Recent Form
Since making back-to-back Challenger quarterfinals on the dirt and then breaking through with his maiden title at that level in late August and early September, Andreev has reverted to the player that we’d become accustomed to seeing for most of his career.
There’s no doubt that the talent and ball striking ability are there, but the ability to play at his best level with any semblance of consistency has deserted him and we’ve seen him go through a rough patch this fall.
Perhaps being back on clay where his best results have come this season will help, but losses early in main draws and others in qualifying of Challenger tournaments are far from inspiring.
He could very well find that top level for a day, but with the expectation of that over 60% and his recent returns being anything but reliable, I’m happy to oppose him in this match.
Nick Hardt Recent Form
He hasn’t played since August 20th (so nearly three months now) and even when he did, his losing streak of three matches came against Francisco Comesana (a clay specialist currently in the top-100), Bernard Tomic (mercurial, but incredibly talented) from 6-2 up and Borna Gojo (a big serving, big hitting quick courter by trade) on a hard court.
That isn’t even really anything to fault him for, and he may have done it somewhat hurt.
Give me the nice underdog odds here on Hardt!
