It’s Over! I have started each article that I have called an elimination game with the same words because it’s been lucky so far so I’ll use them again. The Avalanche is about to sweep the Oilers right out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and I gave you the reasoning as to why in my Game 1 article. Mike Smith!
The Oilers have managed to succeed during the entire campaign, but the end-all tell-all was still going to come down to Mike Smith and his ability to keep the puck out of his net. It hasn’t worked at all thus far because the higher the stakes get the higher the pressure becomes. Mike Smith has never been able to produce solid numbers at this stage over his entire career, and it is about to cost the Oilers another bid to hoist the hardware.
Hey, I am not here to call out the dude or tell anyone they aren’t good enough but the numbers support the facts and I pointed it all out for you last week. Now, the finality of the Oilers’ season is here and I wonder if Mikko Koskinen is ever going to get his shot to make an impact in this series? Can the Oilers really let Mike Smith give up goals like the first one of the night in game 3? Okay, it was a knuckling puck from a deflection off of his defensemen’s stick but that is still just unacceptable in the first minute of the good ole hockey game.
FIVE-HOLE! Come on man, I honestly thought the Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft might rip Smth out of the net just like that because losing Game 3 after losing the first two games of the series is obviously about as grim of a situation as there can be. The Oilers gave the Avs a good fight at home but Colorado has now walked in this building twice and taken a victory. (1 reg season win and now 1 playoff win)
Now, this line is moving on the tip that I want to offer so I will give up two tips to make up for the juice/vig. I saw 1.87 on the Avalanche to win this game with overtime included after game 3 was over. I assume the more people see any type of value left to find, they’ll have to fancy a wager on the Avalanche to wrap up this series. When they end up there with home-ice advantage, the Avalanche will have to wait for either the Rangers or Lightning to join them in Denver to begin the Stanley Cup finals.
As long the line stays within 1.80, I see enough value to suggest the bet, but I also see the 2.10 on Nate MacKinnon to score a goal. Yes, please! I’ll take that to go! There isn’t much more to add because the Avalanche has proven that the road shows nothing to fear for them. Colorado has won both games at Edmonton that they’ve played here this season, and they are a perfect 6 – 0 in the post-season away from home.
I expect Nate MacKinnon to find the net to aid the cause and we’ll cash a pair of tickets in this final game of the Western Conference finals. Break out the brooms, sweep your way to the window, and I will see you tomorrow for the continuation of the Rangers / Lightning series.
Also, Evander Kane’s decision to pick up that 5-minute-major penalty has him potentially sitting out of this game for the Oilers. Be on the lookout for the announcement that Kane could face a suspension for that hit early in the 1st period of game 3. The Avalanche were held without a goal for 7 minutes of power-play time in the 1st period of Game 3, but they did eventually level the score at 1 goal apiece despite the Oilers scoring first again.
Edmonton had put up a fantastic record when scoring first during the season up until the beginning of this series. The Oilers have now lost two games after scoring the first goal which they also did in game 1.
Leon Draisaitl missed a couple of shifts with what appeared to be a knee or ankle injury, but he returned to the ice and finished the game.
Should the Oilers be without Kane, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will have to skate with a new linemate but the two leading scorers in the NHL post-season might only have this one last chance to produce. I don’t think it will be enough to stop the Avalanche from winning this game so the call is for Colorado to finish the series right here and now!
- Selection: Avalanche to Win (OT incl)
- Best odds: 1.85 (Marathonbet)
- Stakes 4/10
- Bonus: MacKinnon to Score at 2.10 odds
